Making SPL competition popular again - Your Thoughts
Depends on the guys you want to attract....and...what about attracting girls to the sport?
Yuli - Just remember that if you went with the combining shows route...you may get some "not interested" comments.
Might I suggest that you prepare your response to this. I would suggest that you offer a "demonstration" to show club organizers exactly what SPL really is and show the dedication, professionalism, rules and commitment required to put on an event.
Your biggest obsticle wil be some people's preconceived notion that cars just go boom and relating it back to those rice machines that go thru the neighbourhood blasting the bass.
Trust me..as a Camaro driver and being part of a Camaro club we do a lot of public relations to show people that we a not a bunch of "street racers".

wet T shirt contests are always a hit would probably bring in bigger crowd as long as the guys showing up are competing who cares what kinda crowd the show brings in , beer Gardens are also a big atraction
cops are going to luv a beer garden as a car audio event...... should I call the TV station now or later

lol well if new somone with a liqouer licence it could work ive been to shows with beer gardens and there were no issues what so ever
but with beer gardens you have to worry about drinking and driving, judges would not allow a competitor who's had a few to many wobbly pops under there belt to drive there vehicles especially in DB drag format. Having a beer garden in an SPL event or show would have too much conflict.

It's great to attract new people, but regulars and veterans need to come out also. I see a lot of people complaining or not bothering unless the show is in their own back yard
I want to make it to a couple Toronto shows this summer, but being about 5 hours out makes it a very long day on the road, and also very expensive. I think what the Psychos are doing with specials is a very good idea, and having regular savings can also help motivate new people to join. If I can save a couple $$$ for the time I put into driving there, it will much more tempting to make the trip.

I dont know what ¨club organizers¨you are talking about, but if they think it´s all about just the ¨¨boom¨ well, they are primarily right. and if that´s not what they want that is fine too, i move on to other ¨club organizers¨.
I mean, what did you expect from an SPL vehicle anyways....boom is what you should expect. if i have to SHOW a ¨club organizers¨ HOW to put on a show and what is required to do so i honestly feel that i would be wasting my own time. again, i would move one to those clubs and organizers who are already in the know as to what it takes to put on a show.
people can relate this to whatever they want, world is full of idiots and im not here to change their minds. sorry.
to answer your question, the guys who are disturbing your block with their stereos at any given hour of day or nite ARE the guys im talking about. im not gonna lie, i was one of those guys and that´s how i got started in SPL. As Im sure more than half of SPL guys started out exactly like that.
let me ask you a question. why do you try to show people that you are not a bunch of street races. say people think you are NOT street races, what happens after that? what is the point of people NOT thinking you are a street racer? how does it benefit anyone? reason i ask is that i believe behind some action needs to be a goal and some objectives. I just dont see what they are in trying to change peoples´minds about yourselves.
SPL cars are about BOOM, SQ cars are about sounding good. You might also combine both to get a mix. I dont believe there is much more to it, Im not gonna lie to poeple and tell them that there is, that´s how you attract the wrong crowd.
if i were to approach a club or a show promoter I generally ask them straight up ¨do you want some really loud boom SPL cars with your show or event¨. The response is rather simple most of the time, it´s either Yes or No. I think that beating around the bush or trying to educate someone with an established preception is asking for misunderstandings down the road. You can trust me on that, been there and done that.
the point of this is not to school people or try to change their mind. the point is to bring together those who are interested (all those with booming systems tearing down your or my block, those who read about or otherwise actively seek information about SPL and car audio circut) and have a positive preception and established presence on the scene (PAS mag, CCA, other car clubs).
Yuli - It was simply a suggestion to try to get more people exposed to the car audio sport be it SQ or SPL. I've been to many car shows and never seen a "car audio" component to it or demo. The exception being the Camaro Nationals which has a SQ car audio competition (which I started).
If you feel that you would be wasting your time approaching these clubs - fair enough.
You asked me "why do you try to show people that you are not a bunch of street races." Well.....the answer is simple. People today are pretty net savy. Camaro's, Mustang's and Corvette's are actually mentioned in the legislation. We also know that certain police departments regularly visit our fourms. At the shows, we have the public asking us about our cars and if we race them. We take this opportunity to tell them a bit about the club. That we are involved in many community events, that we fund raise for charity and we only race at the track where it is safe and enjoyable for all.
Does this change their mind? Who knows, but they have a bit of an appreciation for what we do. AND...it seems to be working. A GM delaership decided to join forces with our club to promote the new Camaro. Going so far as clearing out their indoor showroom and filling it with OUR club cars only during their official Camaro launch. Pretty cool site to see.
You stated that you wanted to bring together those who are interested. I'm wondering how you get new people interested who don't have an established presence on the scene?

I got Visions Electronics in Grande Prairie, Alberta to let me put on a fun competition this year WITH trophies. If corporate is happy with everything then it becomes an annual thing. We are getting local businesses to help out with some of the minor costs in exchange for advertising at the event of course. It took a 3 page email explaining WHY shows need to happen again on a regualar basis. Car Audio is a large culture/scene but it does have to have solid people for upkeep to keep it going.
