Making SPL competition popular again - Your Thoughts
I wonder how the guys responsible for the show at the BB in Kingston last year got that to happen. Maybe they could give some pointers for the rest of us to use when approaching our local big boxers about the idea
I guess SOMEBODY is into what they do
back in the day, and by that I mean like 3 years ago, Chris and the other guy were really into it, and every time we needed accessories they hooked us up. I haven't been there in so long I don't know if they even work there. I actually don't even remember if his name was Chris lol. but yeah they had some pretty nice installs, and they have more than enough room to have a show in the front or back of the store. Hopefully they've got some influence over there.
Oh, and off topic, but I never would have guessed you lived anywhere close to that area lol. No idea why, just never thought of it.

This is a great topic and so very true I have been out the game for a while but I have to say it has fallen off. There was a show in Windsor last summer the only show at that and I didn't even know about it and I guess no one else did either because only one car showed up how sad is that. I remember there use to be like 6-7 shows just here alone Future shop being one of them. I want to get a termlab for testing when I can afford it and I defiantly would love to hold some shows next year. But I want to try to support as many this year as I can.
yes paul us guys from windsor need to all meet up some night ( once i got the new system in) would be a great time was a bit cold last time haha
it would be nice for windsor to have some shows get more people interested
i plan to get to some shows this year could cruise out to them!

Yuli - It was simply a suggestion to try to get more people exposed to the car audio sport be it SQ or SPL. I've been to many car shows and never seen a "car audio" component to it or demo. The exception being the Camaro Nationals which has a SQ car audio competition (which I started).
If you feel that you would be wasting your time approaching these clubs - fair enough.
You asked me "why do you try to show people that you are not a bunch of street races." Well.....the answer is simple. People today are pretty net savy. Camaro's, Mustang's and Corvette's are actually mentioned in the legislation. We also know that certain police departments regularly visit our fourms. At the shows, we have the public asking us about our cars and if we race them. We take this opportunity to tell them a bit about the club. That we are involved in many community events, that we fund raise for charity and we only race at the track where it is safe and enjoyable for all.
Does this change their mind? Who knows, but they have a bit of an appreciation for what we do. AND...it seems to be working. A GM delaership decided to join forces with our club to promote the new Camaro. Going so far as clearing out their indoor showroom and filling it with OUR club cars only during their official Camaro launch. Pretty cool site to see.
You stated that you wanted to bring together those who are interested. I'm wondering how you get new people interested who don't have an established presence on the scene?

what i was saying is, many of us have tried to combine SPL with a variety of other events where people responsible for those "other events" really werent interested or already had a set opinion. It's very hard to work with those individuals and usually co-promotions like that do not work out very well. Scenarios like these have also included car stereo shops, believe it or not. I even recall a car audio shop owner pulling the plug (both literally and figurativelly) in the middle of the event b/c he had a sudden change of heart.
how do you get new people interested? I really have no idea. Again, this isnt about getting a totally new individual interested. Mainly b/c it is harder to do than to try to promote the scene to those who are already interested.
by interested I mean those with car stereos who wish to either compete or spectate but do not know when, where or how. you know?
when i was like 17-18 I had a stereo, i thought it was super loud. always wanted to find out how loud compared to others. I saw an ad for the very first house of boom at futureshop in Toronto. I went to that, I got spaaaaaaaaaanked. Then some years later there was AudioThunder, again I saw the ad for it somewhere. I used to go and just watch all the SPL guys battling it out. After watching it a few years, I decided I was good enough to enter. Again, i got spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanked. Years later things changed and i won a whole bunch of events.
what im saying is, I was already interested but really had no idea on how it is done or where it is done, etc. All i had was a stereo and desire to go against others with stereos. Had it not been for those ads I saw for FutureShop shows or the AudioThunder I would have probably never ended up at a car stereo comp.
I've got one...
My brother in law was over and I was showing him something on here when he mentioned something about the long SPL guys signatures. Long story short, he said if he was new to the scene and saw these scores he'd be intimidated to even bother trying. Especially since he thinks mine is really loud and sees what other peoples scores are and asked why I even bother.
So I got to thinking... How many other people come on here and see the "intimidating" scores and just don't bother??? Now if we only posted say "140db", "150db", "160db", people who have never been metered can put "0db". If anyone wants to know peoples real scores or classes they will just have to go to a show, send them a PM or check the organizations website if they have a profile.
Just a thought... might bring out the curious if no-one else...
... leave a little something for the show.

Simple: It's motivation. I'd be proud of a 155 and want to show it off too. Reality check, people...that's what it's going to take to win.
If you think you're going to win with a 135, just because you've never been to a show, you're going to get your *** handed to you. If you enter and you already know your *** is going to be on a platter, then it makes it more fun - takes the bitterness out of losing.
I'm entering the SQ comp July 27th. I've never done it before. I fully expect to be the cellar dweller in the competition, but I don't really care. I want to try it. Why? Because I've never done it. I know I'll get better in the future, but you gotta start somewhere.
