Is 8" enough??
#1
I'm looking to change my sub set up and have been thinking about using three JL W3V2 subs. Each will be recieving about 200 watts (600 in total). Cabinet type hasn't been choosen yet but will obviously be ported or sealed (leaning toward sealed). My question is, will I still get reasonable output from three 8's? I would like to hit the 135db that IASCA requires for full points. Also, for those that have listened to 8" subs before, will I still get good "presence" as far as low frequencies are concerned? I dont need to shake off my mirrors but I do still want good low extension.
Thanks

I used to run 2 Kicker solo 8"s (round) with about 250w each. They were in an extremely small box too if I remember. Somthin like .33 of a cube. I was hitting the 130db mark without bagging them too hard.
I would go back to a dual 8" set up in heartbeat. So tight, yet you still got the low end. Only problem I has was getting the 20hz up on the RTA. But that could have also been from lack of an EQ that went that low.

Hey
Like Fat Whacker I also used to have a pair of the Solo 8d's. I found they did have a really good response to the music I listened to at the time. If you are into stuff with drums they do an excellent job of the kick's. My boxes were a little larger - 0.4 cu ft.
I found the best reproduction for low end was to have them in the corners of my trunk facing backwards. Got even louder when I started to remove the foam holding the seat in place
Good Luck, J

I too agree that you can get a great amount of bass for SQ purposes with 3 - 8's. Bass will be deep, punchy and tight and should have no problem hitting 135 in a ported box. 3 8's have almost the same cone area as a single 15 (not counting cone depth).
