Bad A$$ Subwoofers

The Contra bass is also a servo drive sub. And there was a time that servo-driven subs were abvailible for cars.
Funny you should say that derek, sure driver technology may have advanced thanks to car audio - but the big leaps we are seeing now is with the amplification and processing. I don't know about you but I havn't seen a single car audio subwoofer setup that compensates for room effect or measures the ouput and adjust acordingly (if there is such a system please enlighten me )
I personnaly do not know enough about the history of car subwoofers to make a statement such as you did. I do know that the home theater guys were making, researching and implemneting subwoofer systems back in the '70s (M&K). There work (IMO) laid the groundwork for all these sub/sat sytstems we see today. Can you say that one disiplince was responsible for the other? Tough to say. I believe it is more of a perperual thing. One advancment here lead to another advancement there which brought about another over here...etc.
And your right in your assumption that I think the new stuff is cool. No need to apoligize there. I just never said that "the new stuff is better" - just that I am excited by the direction subwoofer technology is going. I belive that box and woofer design has hit a platau (for now)and the big advancments (today) will be with room integration and other post-processing.
I just can't help but get this feeling that you keep mis-intrepreting my posts. Oh well the intreweb has a way of doing that

...but alot of the "advancements" in subwoofers is more a result of car audio than home theater.

The test sessions were conducted in a large parking lot at Golden Gate Fields racetrack, on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Savage stood in the middle of the subwoofer ring, where he experienced the effect of very low frequency sounds (down to 5 Hz) at extremely high levels (120 dB SPL with a 9 Hz sine wave, up to 153 dB peak with narrow-band noise), though the higher levels were possible only above 20Hz. Safety was a prime consideration: tests were limited to about five minutes in each frequency range, and industrial-grade hearing protection was used above 120 dB. Savage was wired to medical monitoring machinery and watched closely by paramedics during the tests, while additional protection for those working in close proximity to the subwoofer stack was provided by a box of extra-large Depends.

Pic of setup used in the brwon note experiment:

The myth was busted. Adam didn't have any ill effects fom the bass. However, when the REALLY deep stuff was played several of those in attendance reported some slight nausea and other slight effects such as some slight dizziness. Could have been a placebo effect..who knows. Like I said before, at the end they hit Adam with all kinds of bass, not just the low stuff and he seemed almost "high" from the experience.
