Any cap over 2 Farad is a waste / useless, I agree. Caps have been marketed incorrectly for years but it's far too late now to change strategy.

We use caps to stabilize voltage between two amps.

Usually the sub amp will steal power from the amp that is being used to power the front stage. When this happens it causes strain on the tweeters, causing them to blow. It's a nice fix for that. It is not used to substitute a proper alternator.

I am waiting for Mr. Godzilla to chime back in, primarily because of this rather superior comment :

I wish i had a dime for everytime I have to explain why a cap will not stop your lights from dimming, and it will not save your battery/alternator.

Anyway, full disclosure tommorow. Any more useless cap comments?

Cheers!

John

Capacitors definately have their place in the car audio world. Unfortunately they are the most mis-used car audio accessory in history. One can never ever-ever have enough capacitance. lower the ESR the better. But it's not the miracle fix that will save an alternator or batter or increase SPL. I've been on audio forums since 1998 and people still don't get it. it goes to show how fantastically uneducated the average car audio guy is. 90% of people still focus on "watts" for their speaker purchasing criteria.

Stop beatin the dead horse.

Guess all the spl\bass racers\loud daily guys should take all their extra batteries out?.....

Capacitors are for smoothing voltages, they smooth out any ripples, due to changes in load, they can also kill off electrical noise, they also pack alot of power that can release quickly, but they will also go hunt for electricity.

If your alt isn't up to it, you will kill it because when that cap is empty it's basically an electrical black hole, and will max out your altenator. This is why SPL guys run lots of batteries. Caps are useless in the voltage support role, all they do is make it pretty.

So... Bigger altenator + Bigger battery + Better wiring. Then you can look at caps to improve response time to voltage draws from the amps. Without the supporting cast, you'll be swearing a blue streak while you go through altenators like bubble gum.

*Oooo.... First post, and it's a preachy one to boot... lol*
