if you want an all out kickass cd for sound q and enjoyable listening, pick up Godsmack's: "The Other Side". It is recorded so well, it even makes crappy systems sound pretty good.

CD Title: Jeno Hubay, The Romantic Violin Concerto#3.

Composer: Jeno Hubay
Violinist: Hagai Shaham
Ensemble: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Conductor: Martyn Brabbins
Label: Hyperion.

Jeno Hubay(1858-1937) was a Hungarian composer, musician, and virtuoso violinist. Being a virtuoso performer, most of Hubay's early compositions were written for his own development of violin technique, but were nonetheless also widely accepted throughout Europe when performed by other composers and musicians.

On this cd, we get Hubay's violin concerto#3, followed by variations on a Hungarian theme, and then finally violin concerto#4.

Hagai Shaham performs all of Hubay's difficult violin passages with ease and a sense of flow. He is very well supported by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra led by Martyn Brabbins.

Recording took place in Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh Scottland on December 13, 14, 2002.

Hyperion has done a superb job with the quality of sound engineering. The church's acoustics are audible on this recording as the background is not totally black as is on some well engineered studio recordings.

CD Title: Baroque Transcriptions, trumpet&organ.

Trumpet: Paul Merkelo
Organ and Harpsichord: Luc Beausejour

Label: Analekta.

Paul Merkelo uses three different types of trumpets on this recording; trumpet in C, trumpet in A, and a piccolo trumpet in B flat. The use of 3 different trumpets adds a sense of flavor and variety to the music performed. He is the lead trumpeter of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and he does a stupendous job of trumpeting on this very excellent recording.

Luc Beausejour plays the organ and harpsichord with complete professionalism to accompany the trumpet playing. The organ, being a pipe type of church organ goes down very low on some passages and will test your subwoofers for sure. The harpsichord on the other hand, plays mostly in the midrange section and some in the upper ranges. The trumpet travels very often through its upper ranges of frequency but never sounds shrill to the ears.

The music of composers such as Bach, Purcell, Handel, Stolzel and Albinoni are performed here.

This is definately another audiophile recording produced by the Analekta label.

Recorded from April 22-26, May 20-21, 2003 at St. Matthias Church, Westmount Quebec.

Defro, all the information about the composer, orchestra, conductor, and musicians featured on a cd are derived from the liner notes which accompany each cd and also in audio magazines.

I listen to each cd in my car and then evaluate the sound quality.

The write-up which then follows is in my own words with my own thoughts.

...once again...I've got to get my car out to Calgary to try out some of your library Kieth.

I'll be there some day...don't worry.

Thanks for taking the time to share great musical finds. Nobody else on the forum holds a candle to the sheer volume and quality of your CD recomendations.
