The Crystal RPM 693's sound good, pretty decent bass output, cheap too.

Jl Vr series are wicked sounding, and if mounted freeair with some power, can play really low.

My KW Excelon 6x9's didn't sound to great when I was giving them just 50 watts each, and they're rated at 300...

Bridged my 50x4 amp (it was also driving some front 5 1/4's) to 100x2 and BAMMO... they sound nice and phat now. No complaints whatsoever. You purists may frown, but I'm more than happy with them.

I just picked up some more supplies and we're going to make some sort of pillars that get mounted to the rear wheelwells in my van, that my spare set of 6x9's can sit on. Should be smokin'

WO WO WO as your resident purist here (still no TA or EQ though I have been tempted by the Dukk er I mean Dark Side) and I have not looked down my shortest path length possible nose at them. I think 6 x 9 drivers have a number of things in their favor and the certainly do some things quite well. They are a compromise driver, BUT all drivers are compromise (we can’t afford the priciest, can’t live with the low output of planers, can’t fit in horns etc.) If you can place them properly they have a chance to be excellent drivers

I have Excelon 6x9's and to me they sound very nice.

I realize that they just don't compair to a nice component set but neither does the price tag.

It all depends on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend.

My thoughts on 6*9's

While 6 by 9's can sound decent and are generally pretty loud, they are almost always installed in the rear of a vehicle. Do you really want that much sound coming from the back? Unless you have monster speakers up front they are going to over power your front soundstage.
Of course they could be attenuated a bit and used for rear fill, but then like any co-axial, you've got the tweeters pointing in the wrong direction.

"IF" I use rear fill at all I unscrew the tweeter from the speaker -- I usually like a 6x9 with a large magnet and I turn the level of them down (I have my speakers faded forward +6 on my RF Deck)
