Guys...

This has been a very interesting discussion. I am currently debating between the following:

1. Replacing my head unit (currently Eclipse 5301 - top of the line 10 years ago) with either an Eclipse or Alpine unit that has EQ/X-over/Time Alignment capabilities. I will get a newer CD player and a lot of processing that I don't have now, but I will not get as much as if I go with Option 3.

OR

2. Adding the Alpine PXA-H700 or 701 (2004 model) to my current Eclipse unit. I will get full control but will have mismatched units (cosmetically) and the system MAY suffer from using a 10-year old deck.

OR

3. Replacing my current Eclipse head unit with BOTH a new Alpine CD player AND the Alpine PXA-H700 or 701. Obviously, I will get much more control over the system, however, popular opinion seems to be that I will sacrifice sound quality. It will also have a lower output voltage.

Is Alpine's HU F#1 Status CDA7990 available any more? I've heard it is discontinued.... I suppose it's Ai-Net compatible, right?
What are the advantages of this feature!!!?

Another question!!!
Since I will be using PXA-H900's DAC is it worth getting CDA7990??

What about CDA-7998R with optical output??
Since it is Ai-Net compatible I will be able to control the music level from the HU and tha PXA.. Not only from the processor!!
Right?

Ok guys, time for another test?

Keith I'll get a high end home CD player hooked up to the car and see if I can tell much of a differenct between it an my DVA-7996.
I recently did the opposite and ABed an inexpensive portable CD player and my McIntosh HU. The initial difference was minimal but after extended comparison the Mac gave more information and a different tonality.
