How to tune my amp properly??
#1
Headunit: Sony XAV-7W DVD in dash deck.
Amp: JBL 600.1 Monoblock (600w)
Subs: 2 JL Audio 10-W6's (300w RMS each)
Box: Sealed box. Around .5 litre smaller than spec recommended sealed enclosure.
So here's the problem.... I have those three dials on the amp:
- Input Level
- LPF Freq (32Hz - 320Hz)
- Bass Boost (up to 6dB of boost @ 50Hz)
I definately don't want to blow these subs, but I won't be getting an enclosure to specs until I have my new car... (mid to late summer). I do love my bass... so what is the best way to tune the amp for these subs to get some solid bass, without having to worry about blowing them? Keep in mind the sealed enclosure is a bit smaller than spec.
This is in a BMW 3-series, sound is ported into the cabin through the ski-hole.
Any advice from you guys is appreciated,
Justin

There is one method using Test tones being discussed in General:
http://www.canadiancaraudio.com/ubb/...c;f=3;t=008837
The method I have used for years has been to use my trusty ears.
Start by leaving the bass boost off.
Then set the LPF to around 90hz.
Turn the Input Level to its lowest setting (whatever gives the least ouput).
Now put in a bass-heavy disc that you normal listen to.
Turn up your headunit to around 75%.
Now slowly turn up the input control to get your desired ouput. Ideally this should blend well with your front speakers.
As for sdjusting the LPF, that can be trickier. Adjust it and hear what the sound is like. Set it to your preference. Really it comes down to blending well with your fronts.
