Ok, I've tracked down both an H700 and H701, both $300-ish, but the H701 doesn't have a controller (I'd have to buy one). Can anyone tell me what the major differences are between the two? I don't have any other Alpine products so I won't be using any of the fancy connection stuff, nor do I have DVD or video.

^ Pretty much identical. The key illumination color on the controller is different and the 700 came with the controller while the 701 it was/is sold separately.

If you can get the H700 for 300, jump on it.

Ok, I need somebody with an H700 to help me out here. I'm almost ready to buy this thing, but one thing is holding me back: stereo inputs. This is a big deal for me, as I don't have a place in the front of my car to mount the Alpine controller. There is no center console, only 1 DIN available in the dash, and the glove box is being used by something already. Basically, I'd want this thing in the trunk. I know I'm giving up my fade and balance to the Alpine unit, but I'd still like to be able to adjust on the fly to boost the low and midrange for my iPod. Will I still have SOME control over this? My HU is a Premier DEH-8MP.

My other option that I'm exploring is to just scrap the fancy H700 and buy a new headunit, either a Permier DEH-P800PRS or 880PRS, or an Eclipse 7200 Mk II, something with a parametric EQ, crossover, and time alignment built in. Then I can use my Audiocontrol manual EQ to iron out the peaks on the front/rear channels.

What do you guys think? This is driving me nuts.

If you can't put the alpine controller anywhere, then all you will have available for on the fly change is whatever functions your deck has, most likely bass trebble and balance (whatever is left to right volume).

You can always slap the controller in the glove box or embed it into your sun visor, under the seat.

IMO The Alpine H700 is too clunky to adjust on-the-fly. A "little low end boosting" is a multistep operation It's way faster on a deck to adjust the sub out level.

heh - if you decide to pass on that H700, let me know how I can get it

^ Will do. It has 5 storage blocks, so I could store a setting for CDs and one for the iPod. Might take some time initially but once set up it would take a button press to switch EQ's.

Sucked it up and bought the Alpine. Should be here next week sometime. Hopefully we can make it work, otherwise I'll put it up on here
