Sound room

The SQ section is a little slow these days, so I figured I would start to post info on my current project. This isn't car audio related, so the mods may decide to move the thread.

I've lived in my current home for about two years now. Its a 100 year old two story, that never had a finished basement. so I decided to put a dedicated sound room. More to the point, a home theater. My last home had a dedicated theater, and my family loved it. It was my first home, so having a theater is pretty fun. But acoustically, the room had some issues. I didn't want to go nuts on the treatments, as this was just a stepping stone home. I plan to stay where I am for a long time now so I'm going to be a little more free with my money and design. However, nothing is perfect, and this room will be no different. I'm going to go through most of the design steps I making to room, and some ideas I've had related to the treatments I will be applying. If there is any interested in the thread, I will try to be thorough. If I'm boring people, than I won't add much.

The room is a 12 x 16 with a 7 ft ceiling. Not a lot of height, but I will do my best to work with what I have. The room will use a combination of absorption, reflective and diffused surfaces. I'm making all of these treatments and am willing to share the math required to create them. None of this is hard, but there are lots of parts that need to be made. The room will not be done until about mid summer (my best guess).

Stay tuned for pics.

Thumbs up

I had a fun time eliminating a node in my basement a couple of years ago.....stoopid thing was a bass dead zone centered around the far left seat on a sectional sofa till I found the right spot for the sub.....

I still have the sheets I found online with the formulas for calculating all the standing waves etc. Hopefully I never need to move....

Good luck with this project.....subscribed to see how it all comes together.

I won't say I'm an expert by any means, but I have some honest experience behind me. Some of this stuff was learned on the job, some from books and some from trial and error. I'm also lucky enough to have worked with some of the best audio minds in Canada. There isn't anything new here for me (not really) but it's the first time I'm going to implement this much stuff for myself.

One a side note, my sub placement has already been set. I still haven't decided what subs I will be using though. I will be building the sub system myself. This room will use either two 15" or two 12" subs. They will be located in the front wall of the room about 1/5 of the room width from either side wall. I don't expect any serious hot spots (areas where the bass is louder than another). As noted in my first post, the room will have a decent amount of acoustical control products.

This room will be home to either 7 or 9 theater style seats (the same type used in public Tuesdays). My wife and I are going back and forth on the quantity.

Hey John I look forward to seeing how this comes along, my brother recently moved into a 70 year old cottage style home up on the danforth in toronto and he has a similar type of basement as you which he is currently installing a very nice home theather with a 100+ inch projection screen, automated lighted, multimedia pc, B&W speakers, velodyne sub and theatre seating. I was just up there today giving him a hand with his setup, he is fortunate because he actually does home automation and home theatre for a living.

Just look up Irwin seating and you will see what I mean. They make seating for all kinds of public and private Theaters.

This room will also use a projector and fixed screen. I am re-using my old equipment from my last home. It all good stuff, and gear is easy to replace. It the room I'm trying to make usable.

Tactile transducers are fun, but I have not found one that was accurate. I'm going the old fashioned route here, and just using subs.

Very interested to see this, its something I have always wanted to do. After being at the theaters last night I really have a hard time watching things at home.
