^ Generally, the more a cone moves, the more distorted the sound. IMO, some of the best sounding, highest impact subwoofers I've heard have been ones with a low Xmax that most jaded kids today would scoff at because of having less than 20mm of Xmax. Build the right cabinet for it though and it will rock.

When I audition a woofer, I listen for the following..
Dynamics - Does the woofer respond quickly and accurately without excessive overhang.
Frequency response - does the woofer sound realistic in terms of frequency respone and offer good extension down to the bottom octave...
Does it get loud enough to reproduce the deepest notes at high volumes - this has to do with more than just Xmax - but also suspension design.
Really, it comes down to the sound of the woofer. I have only heard a hand-full that I consider SQ competition worthy, and that I can remember the names of.. hahaha..
