Sub problem

I will explain this the best way i can.

I was quite happy with my stereo set up for a long time. it was the following:

amp: USA 150
Sub: MTX 12" DVC (lower model, maybe 200 RMS)
I was quite happy with the sound I was getting out of my sub, I just wanted more.

Recently I purchased a used Eclipse DA7122 amp and 2 x 12" Kicker CVR's in a retail kicker ported box. (this is my first ported box. I have always built my own boxes in the past, and they were always sealed)

My deck is an eclipse head unit (about 6 years old i think?) and it has the low and high pass crossovers (which i have both turned on)

When i installed the new amp and subs in my car (1993 Saturn SL2) I put the box in facing backwards.

I found that I didnt like what i was hearing. It sounded as though the subs were hitting a lot of mid and higher frequencies. It sounded like the subs were almost always hitting, and it was a very uncomfortable sound.

I had hoped that turning the box around (facing the subs forward in the car) might help, so i did that, I disconected all other speakers in the car, and played with the settings on the amp. (I also put some towels in the port in an attempt to muffle it)

No matter what i do with this setup, i cannot make it sound the way i want. I would say that i am SQ guy that likes it loud. I like my subs to to sound really clean, and i like to listen to a lot of rock, so when my subs are constantly rumbling during a rock song it annoys the hell out of me...

Did i buy the wrong subs? I thought i was buying the right stuff, but maybe i did not? Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks
Nathan

I had the exact same package as you bought. I hated it from day one. The comp vr's are really low end Kickers. I have no idea what that box is tuned to but it is designed to make noise. I returned mine a couple days later.

HMMM. I'm not going to lie. When i bought the subs i based it on 4 things. Name, Power rating, User comments, and price.

In the end, i think i may have made a mistake...

Perhaps used on a nice SQ sub is the wrong way to go... i dunno.

Before i change my subs "again" I need some more reference that these are in fact not what im looking for? Can I make them sound the way i want if i build my own sealed box?

The box has the most influence on sq and output. However, before you start making a new one, or adjusting the current one, i'd try some more tuning. You say there's too much mid/high frequencies being played...lower your low pass crossover or use a steeper slope (18..24..30 db/oct). I've found that rock music plays best with the subsonic(infrasonic) filter set above 20hz..in my case at about 30-35 hz with a 30 db/oct slope. If the tuning still isn't doing what you want, then you can experiment with sealing the box and adjusting the internal volume using wooden blocks or styrofoam to reduce the volume...if it still doesn't work...a new box or different subs may be in order.

I think you should get one of your buddies to come over a night and come and tune it with you.
