my current system is more sq then spl. I have a kenwood excelon deck(4volt preouts) infinity kappa components up front, clarion comp series 6x9 components in the rear all run off a JL HD600/4 amp(love this amp). my sub setup is bad. Mtx jackhammer 12inch(400rms) in a ported bassworx box powered by a kicker zx250.2. It's wired to 2ohms and only giving 250watts rms(So my sub is under powered big time). I want to stepup my sub setup so it better matchs the sq of the rest of my setup. I bought the sub and box a few years back when I was stupid and knew nothing. Just wanted loud. Now I want more

My budget for the sub setup is around 1500$. if I can do it for less saving money is always great. this 1500$+ would include sub, amp, box, going to need a bigger power wire probaly as I'm running a 4gauge and possibly a capacitor or battery(what's recommended?) being new to dealing with real power I want to do it the right way the first time And I installed everything myself. I prefer doing it myself So if something goes wrong I can trouble shoot it myself easily. Also planning on putting in better front speakers probaly focal maybe clarions again I like my 6x9s but that's for another day. For now I'm focused on my sub setup. Any and all help it's much appriceated

Custom boxes as long as they are built and speced out properlly are definitley the way to go.

this is the issue. I like alot of different music. Rock, rap, hip-hop, metal, techno. I want a sub/box that'll sound good with most of if not all those of those different music styles.

You could go both ways, what I would suggest to you is to listen to both styles of boxes (sealed and vented/ported) the main difference is that a sealed box will play the bass most naturally, a vented/ported box will have greater bass output. With that being said if you like the vented/ported bass better, a custom box tuned to 40 HZ will give you the best of all worlds when it comes to the style of music you listen to. A vented/ported box will be a bigger enclosure overall so if space in your ride is an issue, then sealed will be the way to go.

Ok so that would be good for a single 12? I've heard that 2 10inch jl w3's in a ported box would give me volume and tight sound. Would that be a good option? I'd like to stick with 1 12inch sub but I'll go with whatever will sound better. Any thoughts on that? Again i've only ever owned my 12 inch mtx in a bassworx ported box that's been underpowered so I'm sure anything will be better but I want to get it right the first time

You can get tight sound with a 12 as well. Go with your single 12 in a vented/ported box tuned to 40HZ and you'll be amazed at the output. I have built numerous custom boxes tuned to 40 HZ and had no complaints. These people also listen to the same style music as yourself. I have a single 10" TREO woofer in a custom box I built tuned to 40HZ and sounds awesome with amazing output.

I would also recommend a single 12 in a ported box. With your budget you can definitely do the IDmax 12 with a good amp and properly designed and built ported box.
