I am having trouble finding pics, I have emailed a few of the top guys, but they seem to be secretive as to what they have done.
As for IB being like aperiodic, I am not a technical type so I will leave that to people with degrees [img]graemlins/deal4u.gif[/img] Anyways if you look at the response of an aperiodic enclosure and an IB enclosure they have very similar responses, basically Aperiodic is an IB setup with a resistive pad either behind or in front of the driver in order to flatten the impedence curveto achieve either flatter response or more volume or both.

I have built ported and sealed enclosures for use in doors lately. I have had minimal sound difference with drivers smaller then 8”(I tried 6.5 “ Storm Tempests). On the up, the power handling seemed to be better when driven with my ZPA 0.5 in sealed and ported then IB.At the moment I am using 2 pair of 9” Phoenix Titanium elite 9m in 0.3 sealed each (BP 50hz-150hz) in my doors. They sound much better in sealed them IB. But the ported pod I built was larger and I could not notice a considerable gain in sound. But this was done in my Dodge Intrepid. It may be very different in other applications.

Defro- IF AVI says the speakers will work in a vented enclosure, then by all means give it a try. I have owned several sets of AVI drivers and not one of them was designed for an IB install. I have been to AVI, and the very same drivers they are using for car audio, they use in their home line in, you guessed it, vented enclosures.
Anthony Davis uses a ported enclosure in his car and has won USACi finals, and 2nd place in IASCA finals, so if people are telling you it can't be done, I wouldn't listen. Another car I have seen uses 2 drivers in a ported door enclosure of around .5 cuft I beleive...Pathlengths could be better, but that was not the main goal in his install.

killowatt, i dont think anyone said it cant be done, pratically anything can be done, and i think this is where the discussion lies, the discussion is whether or not there is any value in it, i truly believe it lies in the design of the speakers

there is much more benefit to sealing or venting than just minor, but only if the vehicle allows. i mean you wouldnt want to build a .1 or .15 cubuc ft box and put yor 6.5" speaker in it, in all likelyhood the sound would not be good, with my speakers i got .53 cubic ft vented in the doors of my 2002 neon rt(pics avail if you want) i was able to build a cover for the vent to listen both ways and to say that the difference was massive would be a gross understatement, i mean the differnece on an rta of 5 db at 55 hz, between sealed and vented. that isnt minor, thats a massive amount of up front bass. the vehicle has to allow it to be done correctly. if it cant be done right dont do it. i guess that i just dont agree that you say minor like thats the way it is period. if the car doesnt allow a box to be built(and lots dont if you want it to look "stock") than ib is the next and only logical way to do it, again the vehicle, speakers and like dawg said buget, will sometimes limit the install, but believe me boxes in doors take frightening amount of time to do, im into mine for about 50 hours per door, that 100 total hours, multiply that by lats say 40$/ hour that 4000$ i dont know if i could sleep at night charging a customer that much to build their doors.... yeah i could, like a baby.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but you said the difference between sealed and ported was massive. Have you checked to see what the difference is between Ported and IB in your car? I think that was what we were wanting to talk about with you. And by IB, that means that your doors have to be properly sealed up and sound deadened with at least two layers of mat. That's about 2 hours per door being conservative which includes stripping and cleaning the doors of all the factory gunk and then laying up the mat. Should also lay up some deadening material on the door skin. If you can give that a go, it would be interesting to honestly hear your thoughts on your results.
