This reminds me of a conversation I had with someone far more cleaver than myself (I guess there are lots of those around) -- anyway, we both asked the same question:

A client has one 12" sub in his car, what is the best way to make it louder?

- Our first thought was to add another driver -- after plotting everything out we figured on an increase of 1.5 DB.

- Our second thought was to double the power -- this netted us an increase of 3 DB.

To quote myself from back in the day: Bass is power -- you need power to push air.

I find far too many people want the kick *** woofer (or a pair of them) and then cheap out on the amp, wiring kit, install and enclosure. A $800 pair of 12's with a crappy amp, box or install will have its a$$ handed to it by a properly installed, well powered $100 12 in the right box.

In other words (after reading all the replies to my thread), 1 good sub - 10 or 12 inches installed properly will be fine for an SQ focussed system? The focal utopia 27WX sounds like a good candidate for this.

YES! I know more than a few guys running with a single sub that are very happy with the results -- the most important thing is to have a proper enclosure, decent amp, good wiring and a professional installation.

All depends on what you want! For pure SQ one is more than enough, If you need visceral excitement in addition to good sound quality, an extra driver or three is a good thing... all properly installed and powered adequately for sure. My feeling has always been that you can always turn it down when you don't want the boom, but I'd still like to have it there just in case. I'm getting a little old now, so I don't need the four 15s and 2kilowatt, but the dual 10s and 600 watts seem to fulfill my audio needs these days. Anyway, point being , know what you want and add 30% for fun.
