Gain for an underpowered sub?

I know this might sound like a dumb question but I have a 200 watt rms amp and a 300 watt rms sub and I'm new to this stuff and I managed to hook it up myself. Now I've been trying to set my gain to get as much as I can out of it without clipping or wrecking anything.. my gain goes from 4 to 0.2 on the setting ****. I have it set at around 1.5 but I had it at 1. How much more can I go? I've turned i up more and the sound sounds more dull or something but not distorted but my bass is louder. Can anyone help me out?

go to this site:

http://www.bcae1.com/

scroll down on the right side to number 23(amplifiers), click on it...under "gain controls" there is some info and an underlined "this" link to more info...read it and you will understand what gain is for. Most people do not understand what the gain control does, and therefore misuse it.
