You likely can't hear a sub distorting when you're impairing your hearing with plugs.
How loud DO you want your car to be?
Theives also like to hear you coming, so they have an idea what they're stealing.
A lot of times I hear set ups where you can't hear it clearly inside the car, but outside is quite noticeable, especially if the car is outside and you're inside an enclosed space with little insulation, like a garage.

SQ's? You mean the EQ, right?
IMO, a good system has significantly louder sounding bass inside the car than outside, providing the windows are rolled up.
