Then how do you know anything is wrong with it? You can't base it just on moving the cone with your hand. When you push a cone with your hand you are unable to give even pressure to the cone. The rubbing you heard could have been a result of you putting more pressure on one side of the cone causing the the VC to become slightly malaligned and consequently rubbing against the pole piece or the magnet.

Remember, it is a cheaper sub - the cone isn't as strong or well reinforced lending itself to the VC getting of track.

Actually, it is the wierdest thing...

When the sub is connected to the amp, or if you short +ve and -ve then there is rubbing inside the gap...

If the sub isn't hooked up and the coil is 'open' then thier is no rubbing....

Never in my life have I seen something like this...

EDIT: I still think part of the coil has come unwound... we know that when a voicecoil is shorted eletrical damping is at a maxium... part of the winding must be separated and is getting pushed aginst the gap as the rest of the coil tries to oppose the force on the cone...

I'm prepairing for surgery...
