cwshredder works well for some browser hijacks and recent spyware. I'd still go with Ad-Aware overall. Seen Spybot ruin too many comps to recommend it now.
you can use this program as a replacement for msconfig, which did not come with win2k, you needed to edit the registry to remove those items.

If you really wanted to play around in the registry, the location is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version ->Run
