Umm, Gettnbig, that is terrible advice. I was just houseitting for my parents and they are looking after my brothers Rottie, so I was stuck with him. Now don't get me wrong he is the biggest sucky dog in the world but he goes nutz when he sees another dog. I think it's because my brother had him in doggy day care for quite a bit when he was off working at the rigs. That was for the first year or so of his life, now he doesn't get to see other dogs much so he freaks out trying to go play with them. anyways, I took him for a run down by the river and he hooped into the back of my Golf and smacked his head on the open hatch hard. Harder than I could hit him and I'm a big guy. when my brother had a hatch back he did it all the time in that too. It doesn't faze him. I am sure with a baseball bat or something I could do some damage, but without a weapon I would be useless. Lucky he is a good and well trained dog,other than barking at other dogs.

In all honesty some dogs are just bad, and its strong pepper spray as its supplied for any mail carrier lol Part of their job its like a cop bein givin a gun [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img] (not to the same extent just in general) It's not gonna stop if it doesnt want to [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img]
I got attacked by a female Pitbull awhile back when i was walking out to the bus stop. Stopped at the end of my driveway and looked at it and the thing just started runnin and snarllin at me,
and becuz Im not all that big of a person I ran [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] tripped over a clump of snow in my yard and the dog jumped on my back I covered my head instantly and before i knew it something had pulled the dog off me, but of course I knew I was F'ed so when I started to run I started screamin help so that someone in the area would hear. Turns out that dog had just had puppies so she musta been protecting them but also the dog had a history of being vicious they had to keep it in a cage in the house. If you have to cage the dog why honestly would you let it outside WITHOUT A LEESH!?!?! I was like in grade 8 at that time. They somewhat tortured the dog in the past by teasing it when its int he cage by just kicking the cage and such. They were also Drug Dealers [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] so needless to say that dog was gone that afternoon after it had happened and they were kissing [img]graemlins/2xblown.gif[/img] just so I wouldn't call the cops on them. They had the father dog around still but apparently he wasn't vicious he was friendly as hell but cause of what happened I was always afraid of it and Pitbulls i've been told can turn on you. So I told them everyday this is the time I go out for the bus, either have him chained up or in the house until Im gone. And sometimes he would be out there and I'd have to get a neighbor to come out with me or something so the dog wouldn't come near me. Those people didnt live across the street for very long lol.

Kick my dog and your a$$ is mine, most dogs are only protecting their personal space that a stanger should not be in. Some dogs are dog and people friendly, others are not, and 99% of the time, it is either a bad temperment that has been bred by the backyard breeder or the owner has not brought the dog up properly. Rest assured though, I see you lay the boots to my dog, I'll deal with you even worse than you dealing with my dog.

I hope you never have any service people at your house.. say pizza guy/phone repair/cable.
Its that kind of attitude that some dog owners get, that there dog will never hurt anyone.. will if ever came after me, i'd do my best to protect myself, and that would include kicking/beating your dog.
I like dog's but what people don't seem to get.. is... that they are still animals, i will protect myself before i care about your animal..

If you don't have a "mean" dog secured and a mail man, parcel delivery, or even gas meter guy comes into your yard and gets attacked I think they have EVERY right to defend themselves (ie. kick or kill your dog if need be). In fact, you could be legally responsible for negligence if you did not have the dog controlled, especially if it had a history or was for example a pitbull. I think nobody should tease animals and that is what I think you mean MR2NR, but if we are talking self-defense then I think the responsibilty falls on the owner to have the dog secured.

I totally agree, if you are sitting there teasing the dog by say throwing stuff at it or whatever, then its your fault.. but just cause you walk into house/yard and it tries to get you.. thats what i was talking about

That is in fact what I meant. Our dogs are secured behind a 6' high fence that is planted firmly to the ground to they cannot dig under. It is posted all over the place beware of dog, guard dog etc. Even though we do canine rescue, we cannot be 100% sure of the temperment of each dog. They are not allowed to run loose. They are not allowed to be together. One of our rescue dogs is 100% a couch potato and loves everyone. Our oldest Malamute is 100% people and dog friendly, our younger female is 100% the opposite and must be contained at all times, thus on leash and separated from all other dogs. She is also food and people agrresive. We have had her since she was 8 weeks and was rescued from a bad environment. It was too late though, the damage had already been done by bad temperment breeding and bad socialization. Matter of fact while she was tethered this morning, our male got a little to close and she lunged at him. I was in the way and my 220lbs will stop her dead in her tracks.
Whenever we have company she is always tethered and the company knows to approach with caution. Whenever we are out for a walk or a ride, she is tethered but it is amazing how many people think that because there dog is fine that they do not have to leash theirs. This presents a problem for our dog that is tethered to a bike that is restricted in it's ability to defend itself and the other party does not know that our tethered dog is dog aggressive.
While I agree that you must protect yourself from a dog, I stand firm that if my dog attacks you, you or the pizza delivery dude was definitely somewhere that they should not have been and I will for sure respond with all adequate and necessary force. I do not condone violence at all, be it on a person or a canine but for me, my dog's are family and I will protect them. We are highly responsible dog owners that rescue dogs in our spare time. We always assume the worst when it comes to our dogs and take no chances nor risks with them.
Just because a dog is running at you and barking does not mean that it is in attack mode, it is the uneducated people that have had run ins and do not know how to read a dog's demeanour that results in the fear factor and the assumption of an impending attack. Some dogs have a bad rep for this more than others. One of the worst dogs to have is a sheltie or border collie for dog bites, especially if you have young children. These dogs were bred to herd and that's exactly how they do it, with nips and bites and when faced with young children it is the generally the first thing that they do. Some dogs can learn disipline and be corrected, others cannot. Our Malumutes have a huge prey drive for small animals like cats, rabbits, sheep, small yappy punt dogs etc. This is genetics and cannot be reversed but it can be kept at bay with a proper well contained run and proper ownership of your dogs.
Responsibility is with the owner, no doubt, but if you walk into a well disclosed do not go area for fear of 80lb Malamute that is guarding her territory, who is in the wrong here? That is when I'll kick your a$$, not when you come to the door to say hi and get properly introduced to our little terror and understand about her.
