Hello, today i decided to swap out my RCA cables from my head unit to my amplifier. The head unit is a Power Acoustik PTID-7002NR, and the amp is a hifonics brutus 1600Watt. As i was replacing the rca's, I first connected them to the head units sub outputs, then to the amp. The only problem is that, i turned the head unit on before I made the final connection, and i accidentaly touched the middle lead of the rca to the case of the amplifier. This caused a very loud pop and put the amp into protect mode. I quickly turned the stereo off and connected the last rca, but when i turn it on i get no sound. The amp is working good again and not in protect mode. Also, if i switch the rca's over to the rear rca output i get sound again through the subs, but just not off the sub outputs. Did stupid me fry the sub output on my headunit?? . If not, is there any way i could fix this? Thanks for your help.

 

sounds like yyou did what you hoped you didnt.

 

Sounds like you put some power into the signal line and damaged the HU sub output devices, the fix would probably be unpleasant $$ wise compared to the cost of the HU. Your not the first if that makes you feel any better.

PLEASE verify what works and what doesn't prior to spending money though more than one item could be affected

 

Thanks for the replies! Both the front and rear ouputs still work, just not the sub output. I think i will just run the subs off the rear channel for now, don't really feel like spendin money on a low quality HU when i could save up for a better one. I've never like the design of the hifonics brutus amps side plates, there metal and whenever you make a connection to the amp you have to be careful because if you hit the case with any wires or a screwdriver( especially if tightening the positive input and it touches the case), you will get a big spark and usually end up in protection mode. I still can't believe i left the HU on while making the connection, its the first time i've ever done that, im usually more careful. Let my mistake be a warning to people to turn your stereo off before connecting rca's!!!!!!

I was actually just reading about this the other day. I think it was a Pioneer issue, when swapped hot will blow the pico fuse inside

 

I've owned Pioneer HU's for many years and not once did I ever blow an RCA channel... and I've plugged/unplugged RCA's with deck on many of times... although I keep them away from ground sources.

Definitely sounds like you popped something. I think it's time for a new deck.

 

Well, the deck still works fine other than the sub channel but I agree its time for a new deck I might open it up and do some troubleshooting and see if I can get it workin again. If its a pivo fuse is it easy to change?
