i bought an older alpine headunit to use in my landcruiser that i drive in the summer with the top off. anyways i bought the thing and took it home and gave it a quick hookup straight to the battery to see if it powered up fine and stupid me, i hooked it up backwards. power wires to ground and ground wires to positive terminal. anyways, i opened it up to assess damage but i dont see any obvious signs of any damaged internal components but the deck has no power when connected properly and there is no built in fuse (unless i'm really really dumb) the unit model is CDE-7821 and I'm sure a few people will say just to chuck it and buy another but I would really like to repair it if possible. thanks.

should have a black box on the yellow wire? if it does that is your fuse. if noit it should be an easy fix for any tech to fix.

Sizzle, if you need to get it fixed I would take it to Japan Electronics on Main Street in Vancouver, around 33rd. 604-872-0672. Pretty good guys to deal with, trained on Alpine products also.

nope, the wire doesn't have an inline fuse.

yah i have, but as i mentioned, i wired it directly to the battery so there wouldn't have been a fuse that the power would go through.

Follow the power input trace...hopefully you'll find a diode at the first connection....if there is, it should go to ground on the other side. A lot of units use this as reverse hook-up protection for people that don't know how to boost a car.
The diode blows, protecting the rest of the unit....I dunno if your deck has it or not, but it's easy to replace.
Also make sure you use a 5 amp fuse when testing anything...it can help keep the factory smoke in.
Of course you could do more damage by following my advice, so caveat emptor.
Good Luck

a guy at work fixed it. he took the circuit board out and said that there was a trace that had been fried on the underside. i don't know what that is exactly, but it's all better now
