I personally am not saying my experience is useless get your own, I'm saying that your ears are your "experience", it doesn't take any experience, talent or know how to know if the sound is pleasant from your ear.

As an example, if you asked what is the better deal for the money, a apple or a orange ? Well a person might not like the one of those, meaning your taste buds are like your ears, your gonna know when you like something or don't like something by listening to them.

If I told you that brand x was the best bang for the buck because they handle the most power, they are used mostly by people that listen to the same music you do and they will work best on your deck and amp, BUT you bought them and they didn't sound good to you then what do you do ?

I'm sorry I don't know any other way to give advice on this topic but to be honest and give you advice on how you should buy speakers.

If you have the chance, go to a shop that has several different kinds of speakers on display, take a disc that you know well and you like and listen to each brand and I hope you will then understand what we have been saying that each brand sounds different in certain ways.

Sorry I couldn't help......

Honestly, you do have to listen to a speaker -- stores can make suggestions based on the vehicle it is going into (what will fit), budget, and what equipment it is matched to (if using components I would not recommend using deck power). Other than that you can look at how the speakers are built (voice coil, spider, basket and the always misunderstood magnet -- whew). In the end you should listen to the speaker in comparison to others before you choose to judge tonality as Tim says. Speakers make the largest difference in sound because they have the most differences between them.

Some brands of components I like include (in alphabetical order):

- Cadence
- Concept
- Dragster
- Dynaudio
- Focal
- Vifa

I have tried many brands not mentioned in my little list, but I perfer the ones I have listed. This is not to say that other speakers are not good, this is just to say what I prefer from my own experience. Others have used other brands with great success... so you have to go on your own experience.

thanks for all the input guys... im still not sure what i want to go with... i have no time to drive to toronto to check out shops.. and im not impressed by the local shops around here... ive had installs by the 2 "best" shops around here for other cars.. and they are hacks... best install ive had in this area was.. gasp! Best Buy

As far as what sound im looking for... i want a strong midrange with clear highs... (lol dont we all) i want my supertramp and rush cd's to sound great :P and i want them to be able to handle 100w RMS.. i figured there might be some components that are most popular for sq in that price range...
but i see everyone has a different favorite.. is there no clear choice?

also im planning to dynamat the insides of my doors and my trunk.. is this a good idea? worth the cost?

I totally get where you are coming from, I know you don't want to steer people inthe wrong direction just because it would be what you would do in their shoes.

and before I go on I'm not trying to argue or debate, frankly I just want to beable to take advantage of your experience

The thing about apples and oranges is that they aren't the same thing
but a speaker is a speaker, so we are more comparing types of apples, like there are sweet apples, sour apples, tart apples and so on. You can't tell me what my ears will like (and by no means should anyone expect you to know) but you can tell me the differences between Brands that the Spec's don't tell about

I agree completely with this (I've been into high end sound for awhile now just not car audio), but what I can't do on my own is test each brand (due to time location and money) to find what these differences are. So I come to this board to ask the people that have heard and compared, not to tell me whats best but to tell me how they sound different from each other (tinny, quiet mids, etc)

basically I want a discription of the sound qualitites of each speaker.

just my .23 (I figure I spent more then 2 cents on that post)
anyway, thatnks for listening

That's just it, they are totally different like apples and oranges, what one person hears and another person hears on the same speaker CAN be very different or very similar, everyone's brains and ear drums hear different, some people clean their ears, some don't, some work in loud environments, some don't, some have medical conditions, some don't.

What if 4 people give you 4 different opinions on the same brand or speaker, what are you going to do ?
Mike posted that he like brands like Cadence, Focal and concept, I have NEVER heard anything from those companies that I liked but I love the sound of Dynaudio and Vifa, I also love the sound of Morel and MB Quart even more, does that make Mike or me any smarter or dumber then one another, no, we have different ears.........

Just trying to help you and anyone else reading this post that spending that kind of money and not listening to find the best for you is a injustice............

Here is another idea if your not in a hugh hurry hit some on the comps and shows and people will be more then happy usually to let you audition there system and ask what people are running. You might hear something you like. Lots of brands out there to choose from so its hard. I know I have not heard to much negative feedback about Focal, Infinity Kappa/JBL GTI or MB Quart. But again lots to choose from.

It also depends on who is more musically inclined, not whos smarter or dumber. and are you sure the recording you guys used are the same? and are the electronic used about the same level? also are you guys listening to the same instrument in the same track? otherwise it make no sense to compare sound evaluation with different recordings and different gears. But a good installer will study the sound trade off and work with it and still make the speakers shine in the installation.

ok i actually found a local shop that has a focal display... i heard the
165kp2's they sound great IMO... but on his soundboard he is using a deck with 6v pre outs and a focal amp... i have a jvc with 2.5v preouts and a rockford fosgate amp good for 100w rms x2... does preout voltage matter for SQ? or is it just so you can run your amp gain lower? will they sound good running off my equipment?

im a noob when it comes to this stuff...

It will make a difference but to the average person you won't notice it, can he play them on deck power only ?
