most likely using different x-over points and slopes thatthe drivers aren't designed for, or dont preform their best at.

Bryan, consider this. If the speakers you heard were distorting, then it is not a speaker issue at all. A speaker just all of a sudden does not start to distort, something must cause it. So, if the person had a really crappily set up system, even the best of speakers would have distorted. To me that reeks of too small an amp, incorrect gain setting, incorrect crossover point on the amp and a clipped signal coming out of the amp. In short, feed a good speaker crap, crap is what you will hear.
