Buying a used sub with no warranty is a big time gamble, especially when there is zero recourse for you.

If one knows the person whom is selling the sub and can vouch for it's authenticity, that is another story. Once in a while I will take in a used sub when I know it's history and it is a sub that I originally sold. Buying used is always a risk no matter whom the seller is, be it a store or a person. If the person or the store is ethical and can show you that the item being sold works as advertised, then I see no problem with it at all. After that if you abuse the item and it is toast because of it, then you are on your own. This is the risk that you assume when buying used.

ya thats why im so skepitcal when meeting up with guys trying to sell me their subs esp. those who dont have it hooked up and are not able to test it out for me at all. I was told a long time ago that there is a technique that you can use to check to see if a sub is blown or semi blown. I was told that you push down near the outer part of the sub about half an inch and if you hear scraping or crunching or friction then the sub is no good. I tried to test this technique out wit a guy that was selling me his w6s and he didnt let me do it and said that it would hurt the sub. That made me even more skeptical. Cuz now im thinking maybe he doesnt want me to hear the friction or maybe he is telling the truth that it would hurt the sub, i dunno. But yea,. buying used subs/amps, is risky business always.

That is the most basic of tests that in some cases is also highly misleading. One needs to have a meter to ensure that the coils are not wide open or dead shorted or damaged. The best test though, listen to them.

looking for an amp in the 300-500 dollar range.

any suggestions?

also, are jl 12w7s worth the investment or is there something better for cheaper?

kinda a noob to the car audio scene my bad.

the W7 is the last place I would look if I was on a budget and wanted good SQ
I could probably set you up with a pair of 12" SSA Icons and an Exile amp
with your budget....
