I did some searching on the board and noticed that quite a few people have this head unit, so hopefully you'll be able to answer my questions.

1) Does the digital coax-in support a "standard" digital signal (such as those found on home video dvd players, and gaming consoles)? I know some digital-in's on various head units only support proprietary connections for the manufacturer's other products.

2) Does it support playing CD-R's? I'm guessing that this is pretty standard by now, but I just want to make sure because all of the CD's that I take in the car with me are backups so that I can keep the originals in the house.

3) I read that it doesn't come with a trim ring (something about the deck being ISO, not DIN)...any special kits that I'd need to fit it in a 99 Sonoma? (I know I need a kit as it is, just checking if this deck requires any further modification for a clean install).

TO answer number 2. If you were buying a CD player of higher quality and you wanted to benifet from its sound quality advantages, me thinks that a burnt CD shouldnt even be in your car.

Otherwise go buy a JVC.


I know some of you will come on and say stuff about higher quality bit rates and how great you are at burning and you just have to know how to burn.

Burnt is burnt they still sound terrible.

I use some CD-r's on my 8250Ti.....yea, slow/n\low is right.....they sound terrible...I burn at a slow speed and only burn songs with a bitrate of 128 or higher and they still don't sound nearly as good as an original recording.

As for the digital output question...they have the same digital outs as the P9 and CDA-7990, however they don't have the optical output that some Home audio units have...they do have a digital RCA output though, which is not availible on a lot of car audio proccessors.

It does not come with a trim ring....you will need to build something for it for a nice clean install.....if I had a digital camera or a scanner that worked, I would post some pics of the trim peice I'm building for my car(Buick Park Ave) If I get Mark Bruno down to buy my Clarion 9255 maybe I can get him to bring down his digital camera and snap some pics for me. wink wink, nudge nudge

Thanks for the info guys. As for the burned CD's, they'd be copies of actual original CD's, so a digital to digital transfer. Technically this is supposed to be lossless as the tracks are never compressed, but I could be wrong...

I did some googling and found that some Nak install kits will fit this deck.

My main concern is knowing if the digital-coax-in supports a standard digital signal in as this would be one of the reason why I'd go out of my budget and buy this deck. By the sounds of it so far, it does.

If they are direct copys of the cd, there should be no loss, as the music is never being compressed.

Agreed.
A direct copy would not be affected...I have a copy of Pink Floyd's Echoes that was burned directly off the cd's and they sound the same.

Something burned off Kazaa or WinMX however, would not be nearly as good.

I haven't tried CD-RW's yet though...I doubt they work.

When I get mine back from the shop for the second time....I'm going to do a direct comparison using the equiment in my Buick.

Right now in the Buick I have the 8250Ti,Phase Linear PWT-130 mid range in the doors, Kicker Resolution tweets, Xtant 2140C 2 channel amp for the front end...powering passive X-overs. I use a Rockford 301S in mono @ 8 ohms to power my Kicker CompVR 12 in a Kicker pre-fab box. All being fed with Scosche wiring and the Platinum Black Twisted RCA's.

Actually it's not a bad system considering what I paid for it.....Most of the equipment that's in my sig is sitting in my room or in the basement for those who were wondering. No point installing it in a $100 car..you know what I mean?

The 8250 made a big difference in my Accord and I am comparing to a 7909 and a Sony CDX-C910................I am very happy with mine..........
