I haven't had a chance to hear the 8240 but the 8250 is REALLY revealing.....when I changed out my Clarion for it, my tweets really came alive...in fact I have the Phase Linear 5.25's in my doors off a passive X-Over that's crossover point is 7K at an 18db slope and anything from 4K and up is just smoking hot right now. I know my car is WAY to bright but I changed out the Phase titanium dome tweets to Kicker Resolution silk domes and it really helped...my next step will be taking the tweets off the pillars and mounting them under the mid in a kick panel. I'm hoping my PLD's are sufficient but I'm really fretting a rainbow affect because of tweeter location....I may take the Phase tweets and mount them in the dash crossed over at 10K on a 6db slope to bring the image up.

It has a coax (RCA type plug) digital input that from what I understand accepts a S/PDIF signal.

^ exactly.

Has the other digital outputs...can't remember what their proper name is though.

you mean balanced? the 2 round ones at the bottom? those are analog balanced outputs, not digital.
