does it matter where x-over's are mounted?

Actually, the closer to the speakers the better. I once had mounted my X-overs next to my amp and at high listening levels the tweeter protection circuit would keep cutting in. Not sure why, just know it will happen. When moved closer to the components it never happened again. Something to think about.

The signal has to travel the same distance no matter what. Only if the crossovers are mounted close to the amp the signal will have four wires to travel down instead of two. It doesn't matter where it's mounted although I like to keep them away from any obvious noise generating areas.

I agree, you'll need more speaker wire if you mount them in the trunk. I haven't been able to tell any difference between mounting x-overs in the trunk or doors/front of car. Technically speaking, I suppose there will be a slightly higher resistance between the x-over and tweeter and x-over and woofer due to the longer length of the cable, but if you are using a decent awg, i dont see that being any issue at all.
