Whatdya know about the big scary "IF"?
I bought two items from the local shop brand new and they both failed .
note: I don't mean to diss local shops, just saying it was a funny coincidence and the best thing was that I had warranty on those items .

First I would be asking why this sales person was recommending one over the other. Find out if he had both in stock for example (that tells you right away which one he wants to sell, easy street and take the $$$ or do it right). What kind of basis does the guy have for making his decision. IE: he has done a similar vehicle and the results were good or bad with the equipment in question. If he is making more $ on Orion as compared to Alpine, he is going to push the Orion.
You have lots of options to choose from, all of which if they are properly matched together for the task at hand will provide the results that you are looking for. The proper matching of equipment is when a good salesperson will shine and a poor salesperson will fail miserably.

I too have had items that I purchased brand new from the distributor fail right out of the gate. In the race to make stuff cheaper these days, we all get what we pay for. For me as a retailer there is nothing more annoying than a customer who lays their bread out for something and then it dies. Pisses me right off. It is one thing if it is abuse, it is another if it is just shat. I had a rep sell me on the best alarms there could have been and look at the great price they are. They created nothing but nightmares for me that I am still dealing with today. For the record, the Astra A777 alarms and all the other Scytek alarms are shat and need to be flushed.

Yes, me too. I purchased an alpine alarm years ago. Kept malfunctioning, i took the car back, they pulled the brain out and reinstalled another. Cost me nothing except time (1 hour if a recall, some stress, not much)
Had that been purchased online and installed at a shop, i would imagine i would have had to pay for install, removal and reinstall with no gaurentees from the shop that it would work. Tons of down time, shipping, rma's, duty and still, no gaurentee!!
I minimize my potential loss by dealing with local shops.

But you're right, there is a chance that nothing will be wrong with what you order, but there is a chance there could be something wrong.
As a consumer, i take steps to minimize my losses in everything i do (naturally, giving money away or wasting my time is not in my best interest).
So if you're asking me why purchase from a local guy, i would say i like their hands on experience. Their expertise in a product line and the ability for me to walk in and deal with them. I blow a fuse, i drive over and they resolve it.
Crutchfield wont do that for me. Price difference, minimal to none and for what i get out of it, well worth it.
As i said about buying from an online store. If i wasn't able to correspond directly with an owner of an online store, id have far less interest in purchasing from them.
For me, i am still a consumer and not that different from you guys. I pay for my equipment, i get the same deals, sometimes the same hassles. Overtime i just realized the stress and time isnt worth it to buy off ebay or crutchfields out there. To each their own, what you decide to do doesnt affect me directly, but sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons.

i just had a tough time with millionbuy
First off they only accept canadian orders if you have an AMEX or wire transfer them money.
So I thought I would try the checkout and see what happens. After specifying I was in Canada I went to the next page and they asked my method of payment. In the drop-down menu was all the credit cards and a bank transfer and paypal. So I chose paypal. Then they asked for my cc number which was optional so I left it blank. Then they emailed me an invoice complete with a shipping price to canada and so on. I was still expecting a link to pay via paypal or maybe instructions on how to do a bank transfer to them but nothing. 3 days later I go back to the website to check the status of my order and it says "cancelled". No email...no anything, just cancelled
So they might be a good company to deal with if you call and talk to a person...they seem to have good prices and alright shipping prices to canada. But stay away from the online checkout it sucks

US Companies make it a huge pain the A** for us to buy from them, yet we still send our money south of the border to save a couple hundred bucks to a company that doesn't pay taxes in Canada nor do they employ Canadians.
Good luck with your warranty and pay for shipping out of your OWN pocket to get it too.
Then we hope the local guy will help solve our problems with everything else.
Makes sense...
Sorry, i'm not trying to sound like a jerk (maybe I am) but this stuff really seems to be a pet peeve of mine.
