im not really sure what you're asking..

if you have a box, and invert mount the sub, it will have more airspace then if it was normally mounted..

but if your building a box, it wont have to be as big.. but it wont make a HUGE difference..

also dont forget to wire the sub with reverse polarity if you invert mount it!

Yea well im thinking of building a box and invert mounting the sub (the magnet out). The manufacturer suggests 1 cub ft of sealed space. Should I stick with that or make the box smaller ?

You can make the box smaller, approximately by %20 if you stuff it with fiberglass or some other heat absobing material.

You dont have to switch the phase. Thats more so for 2 or more subs. BUT it can help.
Inverting the sub does mean you can make the box slightly smaller, but remember, you gotta make room for that big *** fram and magnet.
Also make sure the hole is round enough and smooth so the surround doesnt rub.
