Why avoid silicon?
And I was stoked i go the truck to actually work! Didnt know how to wire speakers or even glue wood at that age lol

 

I've alway used silicon never had issues with the surround on the woofers then again I let them sit over night to try and dry before putting on.

 

So what subs you putting in?

What is it tuned to?

 

Silicones do emit fumes that will dissolve some of the types of glues used in the woofer, Silicone will not hold up to a good sawdust/glue mix. (cheaper and more readily available, after you cut)
I found that silicone doesn't hold well over time, it seems to shrink or let go, and the wood absorbs the silicone.

 

Good work man. It is a very good thing to learn with quality tools and get it built correctly.

As for the silicone debate, if the edges are straight and fit well glue can easily do the job of sealing the box. Nothing wrong with using silicone (I used to do it all the time and still have the 15 year old subs to prove it), but for years I haven't had the need to use it due to better edges and joints.
