On my Windstar the "cowl" comes off easily. The plastic cover around the wipers is just on with clips and under it is a metal plate. Remove the screws and maybe a wire clip for the wipers and it comes right off. Sometimes without even needing to remove the hood.
It's not really that hard, you just have to take the time to do it. Regardless, it'll be much cheaper than paying someone $60-80/hr to do a relatively easy job.

Guys, please, check it out yourself ..
I don't think the cowl removal will do it, still a bit further back but I will for sure check on that DS... Would be a awesome cure!!
Here's what I found, when I checked on changing/getting at the alt..
#1. its kinda tight but you gotta remove the serp belt and remove the front motor top dog bone mounts to allow the engine to move front to acess the rest of the alt, bolts and get it out the tight spot its in,,some years you have to remove the power steering pump,,do not remove it from the car (p/s pump) just unmount it and move it over do not remove the lines,,its a tight fit .
Move it access the rest of the alt...jeeez.
the other way I found..
Actually, the alternator does come out from the top. You need to loosen the motor mount and rock the engine forward and secure it. Then removed the windshield wiper module cover, and you should have access to get it out.
I recommend for safety reasons, if you are not a experienced mechanic that you take the van somewhere for that service. When it comes to rocking engines and securing them, you are better off having a professional doing it for you.

I can't find the "taking it out the wheelwell again, but that was all I found.
I really want to believe I can do it, but.....
