as far as i know most of the sq comes from subs, although amps do have a say in it, because between cone inertia and all that sort of stuff and the spiders and suspension whatever oyu wanna call it modifies the linearity of the sub. for instance a really heavy cone on a sine wave will not move the same as a very light cone and will create some distoriton because it will not follow the wavelength properly or something because it will take more energy to make it move the other way, therefore making the sine wave shape more square (sort of like when you turn the distortion up on FruityKick in the new fruityloops)
Ok now I get it, we have 2 items what you meant and what you have said . An amplifier is most certainly in control of a woofer electrically but the amplifier is not fully in control of the audible output of the speaker. That all will agree with, the electromechanical interface of the speaker, and the resulting quality of sound, is one of the hardest jobs in audio. Some would go so far as to say that an amplifier has little to no say in the audible output of a speaker but that is not my opinion, nor my experience.

The discussion about SQ coming from Subs was a tough one (and literally incorrect as I pointed out) ... NOW if you're saying the audible SQ of musical reproduction is primarily due to the speakers being used then nobody will disagree (at least not much).

It seems we communicate best when you are trashed… but lets never speak of fruitykicks or fruityloops again!

BTW Focal makes great stuff, just not inexpensive.

Dude...................WTF !!!!!

You really have no clue do you....................

Here is a real simple question for you

Scenario.......you have 2 12" DVC (4 ohm per coil) subs and you have a choice of a 1000 watt amp at 1 ohm or a 1000 watt amp at 4 ohm.......

What's your amp choice ????

I am still confused as to why my knowledge of car audio was taken into question by someone who doesnt even know me.

slingshot has now gone into hiding.

oh and as far as SQ coming from the subs?

subs would be way down the chain of importance in building an sq system

I apologize for whoring, but this thread was about PPI amps (which I liked before the ART series and prior to the Xtant} and a few things have stuck in my craw as I read all the posts on this thread.

SVC vs. multiple voice coils. Multiple voice coils are PRIMARILLY a car audio phenomenon. Home subs generally do not have this feature.

Why ?

Because it is another way to make SPL (or sum a stereo out...) not improve SQ or reliability. Please do not tell me a driver is superior sounding or more accurate due to multiple voice coils. Multiple voice coils violate the KISS principle and usually introduce a deviation from neutrality since only one will ideally drive the pole piece.

Tim, relax dude, you’re an icon in this game.

Tim why are you so angry? if the whole efficiency thing really is irrevalent then 4 ohms is definitely the way to go because I have known for a bit that SQ gets worse at the impedance decreases

slownlow... Where does SQ come from then? I was pretty sure it had to do a lot with the subs because, comparing my two Punch Zs (first ever system!) in a sealed box with my Sony Xplod at 2 ohms to my two Titanium 12Ds in a ported box with my Xplod at 1 ohm shows a gigantic SQ advantage to the Titaniums. Even the Xmaxs at 2 ohms were far cleaner then the Zs (and that was in a ported box too).. all using my Xplod
I know the deck has a lot to do with sound quality, but with at-the-limit performance I always figured it had more to do with your speakers then your deck, since problems with the deck (bad preouts, deck amps etc) will be apparent at all volumes? (I've given up pretending to know anything

(Ive given up pretending to know everything)

Nothing wrong with making an opinion on a topic. Heck thats what this forum and other forums are all about.

In most cases car audio is an ego driven pissing contest for most people. Some people should just take a step back, be enlightened and try to learn.

Most people never get the full value out of the equiptment they purchase. If it is Sony or Xtant or Alpine or even Peoples beloved ED. If people would just step back and learn how car audio principles work it would be less painfull for them and they would most likely save a bundle of cash.

Oh and Tim's not mad, he is melow now!!

If you ever had a question for Tim, and you sincerely wanted to learn he is always willing to help, as many board memebers who know him will atest to.
