the 05 uses Adire's xbl^2 motor. 06 is totally redesigned. for more details you can try contacting Scott at Fi, or search around on various forums. I bet people talked about it a lot right before it came out or just when it appeared.

There is quite a difference between the two. In fact, the two technologies utilized are polar opposites.

The 05 XXX utilized XBL^2, which is a gap treatment that machines metal out of the top plate and utilizes a smaller voice coil. This creates two gaps (could actually do more if you wanted to). As the voice coil begins moving, the number of windings leaving the first gap is equal to the number of windings entering the second gap. This achieves linear BL over a long stroke while keeping inductance low, both of which are great for low distortion and wide bandwidth. Lower efficiency was one of the few downsides to the technology, aside from licensing fees that RE Audio had to pay to produce subs utilizing XBL^2.

The 06 XXX uses split coil technology. Instead of splitting the gap into two parts, the coil is split into two parts. In this case, the number of windings leaving the gap is equal to the number of windings entering the gap (note: this is different because there is only one gap). Again, linear BL is accomplished over a long stroke. Efficiency is a little higher than XBL^2. Moving mass is typically higher, as is inductance (due to the larger coil). Being that the 06 XXX has a much larger coil than standard to produce the very high Xmax it is capable of, inductance is much higher. Whether this limits it's usage for you depends over what bandwidth you intend to use it.

Honestly, the 06 XXX has so much stroke that it is capable of that it is very hard to compare to the 05 XXX. If they were close in terms of their linear displacement, I might give the nod to the 05, but the 06 has such a great advantage there that it is hard to turn down. Again, I don't think you'll be dissatisfied regardless of which driver you pick.

I can expand on that more if you'd like. Here's a visual representation of split coil I drew a while ago if that helps; I'm afraid I haven't uploaded my drawing of XBL^2 yet, but I can try to get that up if you would really like it.

Can't remember who recommended the FI BTL12, but I remember something being posted on RoE that the 12s have tolerance issues, and that they are being recommended for SPL only.
I can't remember exactly what the issues were (or if those "issues" actually exist), but you should contact Scott before shelling out the money for them.

Most likely a dual .7ohm coil in series to get 1.3-1.4ohms and if paralleled will give you a .35ohm load.
