two 10's or one 12?

2 sealed infinity reference 10's > 1 Alpine type-R 12. Heard a lot of both and I've always prefered Infinities sound.
RMS Power at 4 Ohms: 456 W x 1
RMS Power at 2 Ohms: 657 W x 1
250 RMS for the 10's and 500 for the 12. I'd give the 10's 328w @ 1 ohm if you can. A little more cone area & power. Over powering probably won't make a huge difference in a small sealed box, just watch the gains. Infinity recommends .75 cf3 for sealed.
If you want better lows than try a $200 Eclipse SW8200 (12) in 1.5 cubes @ 1ohm, they're 670W RMS so that amp is a nice match.

There are plenty of subs out there that will give you what you want (small box, nice sound). I would suggest going to local shops to hear them for yourself. Some shops will let you put their sub in your car for a quick demo.

Is the Alpine the previous model Type r, 300 watts, without the multi roll surround? If so, then the 2 Infinity's will be louder, and will handle higher output easier than the single Alpine. As far as SQ, both are good sounding subs, in general most decent brand name subs sound good within their limits. Obviously there are preferences from person to person, but until you listen to them there's no way to tell which one you'll like better.

I was told by Thumperr/SSA peoples that the Dcon 12 gets lower & louder than the Eclipse and it's only $125 + shipping so nevermind the Eclipse, use the Dcon at 4 ohms and be easy on the gains. No re-cones for the Eclipse anymore.

Other option is to sell the 2 infinitys and the type r and get a sub that is rated for 600+ watts @ 2ohms (dual 4ohm coils). Lots of suggestions have already been put forth, but this would save space, allow optimal use of the amp, and you'll end up with a new, louder, possibly better sounding sub system.

are you talking about this sub? SSA Shop - SSA Dcon 12D4 subwoofer300rms in the single 4 ohm voice coil option? I could live with a small ported box

Most if not all of the companies mentioned have good products from what I've heard...unfortunately, there are so many now that it's impossible to try them all. I will say that Sundown's owner seems to be a very straight up guy, and I would have no problems buying their products. You may also want to look into Digital Designs, Fi audio, Kaption audio's spl series (I think there are still 2 for sale in the for sale section at an unreal price..but it's in ontario), Alpine new type R, RE audio, and memphis audio to name a few more.
