I don't know if I will ever get to installing my SQ focussed audio system using Pioneer's DEX and DEQ P9.

However if I do so one day, I also want to install a navigation system and was wondering if anyone else has done something similar that could give me some pointers and tips.

Which nav systems are good to use in a car with a decent audio system. I really like the Pioneer AVIC N1, but some of its audio related features will be redundant considering that I would prefer to use the audio features of the DEX and DEQ P9 I already have. Of course the bigger problem with using an AVIC N1 in this scenario is that there won't be any space in the dash for the AVIC N1 if the DEQ and DEX P9 are in there.

The other factor I need to throw in the mix is that I want to install LCD monitors in the headrests so that my kids can watch DVD movies and or play PS2.

What do you guys recommend I do to resolve all of this?

Our demo vehicle from last year used a DEX-P9 system with an AVIC-N1 used only for navigation. However, I would probably steer you to the AVIC-88DVD navigation system plus an AVD-W6210 monitor. This way the nav system is completely separate from the audio system & if you want to add some AVD-W6200 or AVD-W6210 for the headrests they would both have dual video inputs (but only the AVD-W6210 has a nav input).
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Dave, can you please be more specific and give me some more details of what you are saying?

Exactly what new features will be available?

The biggest challenge I am having is the fact that I will have to somehow install all of the following components in the front of the car:

1. Nav brain (possibly the Pioneer AVIC-88DVD)
2. LCD monitor for the Nav system
3. DVD player (so that my kids can watch dvd's without me having to remove the DVD nav discs from the DVD player in the nav system)
4. Pioneer head unit DEX-P9
5. Pioneer equalizer DEQ-P9 - although this could perhaps go in the trunk.

Sometimes I wish had never started on this road.....

For Pioneer, navigation won't change much. Some software upgrades to make it faster, possibly a little more coverage & a newer, cooler vehicle dynamics display.
If you want to go ahead with the system you're planning above, it should be pretty easy:
The AVIC-88DVD plugs directly into the AVD-W6210 6.5" widescreen LCD monitor & allows touch panel operation of the AVIC-88DVD & voice prompts from the built-in speaker. The monitor also has dual video inputs for your DVD player (as the AVIC-88DVD does play DVD video discs) & you could feed the audio into wireless headphones. The DEX-P9 combo would then wire to the rest of your audio system.
Hope this helps!

That definitely does help! Thanks!

I have two other questions for you. I found a brand new AVD-W6210 screen in England (on ebay) and was wondering if it would be a problem if I bought it as I not sure if the PAL/NTSC detail will be an issue in my setup. Please let me know.

Second question - Can the AVIC-88DVD nav be completely and fully controlled by the AVD-W6210 LCD Monitor? The reason why I am curious about that is simply because I want to locate the nav unit itself in the trunk and was wondering if this would be an issue operating it. Although that may not be such a good idea as I want it to talk to the Pioneer DEX-P9 that powers the rest of the audio setup so that voice prompts from the nav go through the car's audio system. Is that even possible? Please let me know. Thanks!

Answer #1 - I'm not sure. Since the model number is exactly the same I would suspect that it should work. The navigation goes through the RGB input so I believe the PAL/NTSC factor would only come into play on the video unputs.

Answer #2 - Yes, the AVD-W6210 can completely control the AVIC-88DVD through it's touch panel, buttons & microphone. However, to get voice interrupt over your DEX-P9 system is trickier. What you have to do is modify the mini jack (for the Pioneer voice interrupt specific speaker) & turn it into a standard composite (RCA) output. Then take this output & use a CD-RB10 (or CD-RB20) to convert the IP-Bus input to an auxiliary input. You'll also have to use the cellular mute wire plus the interrupt will only work when you choose "AUX" as the source. A lot of work for not much reward. My advice would be to stick with the built-in speaker on the AVD-W6210 & hope that it's loud enough.

Hope this helps & good luck!

Thanks!

I guess the speaker on the monitor should be loud enough. I mean, how else are you supposed to listen to the voice prompts? Have you heard the voice prompts on this nav system through the lcd monitor's speaker?

I have & it was plenty loud for me but this was on a display board in a retail store. If you're listening to your audio system at a high level it might be a different story. I would say try it & see how it works first before spending any extra time & money on other solutions.

Good luck!
