Monster Home SQ build
Monster Home SQ build
I've been comissioned to build a set of 3-way towers using Hybrid Audio speakers. I know this isnt car audio stuff, but all the basics apply. The design has gone through more changes than I want to discuss, but that's to be expected with a speaker them complicated and expensive. Originally this was going to be a two way design using the C5 and L1Pro, but it has since grown to include the L8 for midbass duties.
Below you will see a pic of the passive crossover parts. Notice the size of some parts. The main caps alone are bigger than the average complete car audio passive crossover. For those interested, this design will be a 1st order Butterworth with impdance correction and an L-pad on the tweeter. I may also need a notch filter, but I wont know that until the units are finished. All caps are by Mundorf as are the inline resistors. The inline caps were custom made for this job are a prefectly matched. All other parts are also matched.
There are a few parts missing as you may notice. I'm still waiting for several inductors and some odds and ends. The inductors are all custom wound and matched.
I will be going through some of the techniques I use to build home speakers here. There is a lot involved in the design and testing. I expecet this to be a fun project.

I'm not going to give away the crossover points just yet. The effiency of the speaker on paper is about 87 db 1 watt/meter. But that may change depending on the final design of the crossover. This speaker will not be bi or tri-ampable. There wasnt enough cash in the budget for the extra terminals (Cardas Patented screw type @ $55.00 each). But that isnt really a big deal IMHO. The speaker will rest at 4ohms seeing as all the speaker are 4ohms (from Hybrid Audio). I'm not sure what amp these speakers will be getting, but it is a solid state.
I was also asked what the finish of the speaker was going to be.
The sides tops and backs are going to be black cherry with a 7 part finish (wine red) while the front of the speaker will be birds eye maple with only a clear coat. A pic of the maple is below.
