Very nice cabinet making skills on display. Kudos!
An L-pad is NOT a bad thing. Take a look at the schematic for some of
Dynaudio's home hi-fi speakers and you'll see a bewildering array of traps, notches and other passive means that try to tame driver interaction.
Regarding other brands of drivers; you can buy kits from Madisound which will yield decent results, or put together the ingredients for your own recipe, as skills allow. In the latter instance, your results may vary, but, given a clear understanding of what's required, great things are possible.

My home theater is starting this fall. That will take up most of my time for room building. I also have a set of dipole towers that need to be built. I may post build pics of that project.
