An L-pad is NOT a bad thing. Take a look at the schematic for some of
Dynaudio's home hi-fi speakers and you'll see a bewildering array of traps, notches and other passive means that try to tame driver interaction.
Regarding other brands of drivers; you can buy kits from Madisound which will yield decent results, or put together the ingredients for your own recipe, as skills allow. In the latter instance, your results may vary, but, given a clear understanding of what's required, great things are possible.

They opened up even more after adding the Bryston Amp and Preamp. I honestly believe that I couldn't of gotten a better sounding speaker. I've listened to speakers ranging from $150 to $7K and I couldn't be happier with the sound. I got what I wanted, 'a pair of reference' speakers. IMHO they are perfect. Thanks Again John. When are we working on the room :P
