2-way sets are easier to set up and run with but they can gloss over a portion of the freq spectrum. 3 ways in theory should fix this but add other issues as well (integrating 6 drivers into the front stage) and in my system occasionally the sound comes from my passenger door vise the windshield.
Each of the driver sets mentioned already are very good. I would throw in Diamond Audio, ID Chameleons, and Dynaudio (my drivers). My recommendation is to check out dealers and listen to their stuff and get what fits the budget.

I wouldn't run a 3 way set for 6 to 700. I'd look into the best 2 way that I could listen to. Everybody is going to have something that they think sounds best. For 6 to 700, you will find a better sounding 2 way than 3 way.

With a 2 way, you are ing the money out across less components so in theory the quality should be better.

Hello
So many choices, I like the Dynaudio, Alpine SPX, Focal polykevlar and Morel lines. If you can find a set of 5 1/4" Mission Freeway components or coax's I would (if I were you) install those in a minute. I used a set about 3 years ago and they really sounded good from any angle even though they were loosely mounted in my door panels firing down towards my feet
I think 2 way is much easier to set up and it takes up less install space especially if you are going to seal the mids and mid-woofers. 3 ways will generally sound better but it takes much longer to properly set them up.
Good luck J

I dont know a huge amount about SQ yet, but I would like to offer my thoughts if I might...

I just installed a set of Pioneer components and from what I understand they RTA nearly perfect when installed 30* off axis.I am extremely happy with the clarity and response from them.As well,Loud Brown Kicker Colt has a set of Kicker components in his car.The nice thing between these and my Pioneer's is the Kicker's have an adjustable X-over,mine dont. But most of you SQ guys run a X-over network anyway,so this should be a big deal really.

Anyway..a couple thoughts from an SPL guy..

The only suggestion I have is:

I agree with the guys who have talked about using a 2-way set up with a sub. The Alpline seps are great but there is alot of room for error. Most people do not realize that the install is 30% and tuning is 70%. Ask your self if your doing the set up or someone else, are you going to use a RTA to help. I have also used 3 way comps as well, but I cannot stress enough...tune...tune and more tuning...cheers.
