Amp cuts out if vol is too loud. what's wrong?
Hey fellas,
Ok so I have a kenwood deck with 50wattsX4, however it's hooked up to a 4ch 1000watt max amp. I'm running the 2 rear speakers (pioneer 220watt 3-ways) and a sub in an enclosure with max 1200watt. The rear speakers channels are set at half the max wattage the amp puts out, and the sub channels (bridged) is set to max. Everything works fine, the music is playing, the sub us bumping, but then if I turn the volume up too loud, (which in my opinion isn't all that loud) the amp will cut out and the protection light will turn on.
I have to turn the vol down a bit then it will kick back on. I don't know what the problem is. I was thinking maybe there wasn't enough power being supplied to it, and if that's the case would a cap solve the problem. Anyways, let me know, I appreciate it.
Ciao

Hey me again, forget to tell you something
A side from everything mentioned above. I installed the amp with a 1200watt rated amp kit. It has an 8gauge power wire. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but just thought I'd throw that in.
I think you are on the right track..... check the battery and ground connections making sure they are clean and solid....
and btw if its cheesy 8awg thats really more like 10, that could be a problem... assuming your amp is 400+ RMS...

pretty sure I know what the problem is if I'm reading this right. When you say you have the sub channels set to max that the amp puts out.....are you talking about the gain or level setting on the amp? If so, that's the problem!!!! That is not a volume ****, it is a gain setting ****.....big difference! It's there to match the voltage put out by your deck. If you have it set too high you will be severly clipping the audio signal and sooner or later you're going to be damaging your equipment!
By the way, don't go by Max wattage ratings (for the most part they are pretty meaningless), go by RMS ratings.

is your sub on a bridged channel? is the sub a DVC? if so is it wired in a configuration that your amp can handle? If your amp isnt 2 ohm mono stable and your running a 4 ohm dvc in paralell, that may throw it into protect when you turn it up since its not meant to handle 2 ohms on the bridged channel.
Thanks for the input
Hey guys thanks for the problem, I'll try to change the gain levels, and the size of the wiring. As far as being 2ohm stable, the amp is in fact 2 ohm stable, but that's for the input.
Ciao

I have seen tons of different reactions with amps this one im thinking that your subs might be a dual 2 ohm sub (who knows u never said what gear u have ) and it wont play at that setting , back that gain up and see what happens
