That seems really expensive for a transfer case... you can get really nice aftermarket ones in that price range.

I'd try and get a good used one or a rebuild, 2k for a new one is steep.

Depending on the problem with your transfer case, replacing most hard parts inside the TC can get very costly in a big hurry. Find out the mileage on the used TC and what kind of warranty comes with it. $1000 for a "good used" TC is not a bad deal providing it doesn't have a million miles on it. If it were my truck and the TC had less than 90k on it, that's what I would do.

How exactly does both the diff and the TC go bad on a 6 yr. old Durango? That seems rather strange to me. I owned a 99 Dakota R/T and a 2000 Dakota R/T. Both held up very good for the time I had them.

I've owned 5 new Chrysler products since 1997 and none of them were junky or unreliable at all. Granted, the most mileage any of those 5 had was 87,000 kms. But I also had a 2000 Grand Caravan that we sold with 120,000 kms that we only replaced front rotors on. And I had a 90 Daytona V6 with 310,000 kms on it. The most money I put into it was $500 to replace the front motor seals. GM I don't trust for reliability although their products usually look good, but the exception to that is my mom's 92 Grand Prix which has done her very well. Fords......nope. Even though my 88 Mustang GT held up great for the 3.5 years I had it, any newer Ford product I wouldn't touch. Something about them I really don't like. They just feel and look junky. IMO anyway.

Imports are great too, but they have their problems just like any car maker. And their bottom-end products just feel like total crap, just like they did 20 years ago.

 

the diff was going to go ,i redid it so i did not need to fix it NOW but it was nfg
the diff is not something on the Durango that goes (but on the rover 4.7 it went and now on my D it has gone ) i gess i'm hard on them .i'm happy it is not the $ of the rovers

 

With the extensive European car collection you have, I'm suprised you'd be concerned with paying a grand or two on a part replacement. I'd imagine the monthly payment for one of your Porsches would be the same if not more! I would think it wouldn't be hard to find a good used TC for your Durango. Lots of them were on the road. Try Reid's in Burnaby for Dodge parts. Oh, I got pics now of those R/T wheels and the grille shell if you like. I give you special price!
