The motor vehicle branch told you that you did not have to pay, in the end though, did you dispute the ticket and did you end up paying or not?

Might be worth looking into with the proper people. It would suck to have it on your history and with moving etc. if that ticket is still there and unpaid it is going to be astronomical to pay when it catches up to you. Better safe than sorry (and it would rob you of funds to pay for stereo gear).

No, this is not a offence under the Criminal Code of Canada, it is a offence under the Motor Vehicle Act. What could happen is that your license may not be renewed and or your insurance may not be renewed. It may depend on the agreements in place between your insurerm the province where the offence happened and your future insurer. Still worth checking into so you don't get bit in the butt.

I always exercise my right to defend myself in court, you are not guilty til proven beyond any reasonable doubt. But with speeding you are going to lose most of the time if the cop shows. If its a bs ticket like " no insurance" when you just couldn't find the card, then by all means fight it, if the cop shows then just let the judge see your insurance card and you win. Happened to me one time and the cop is smart enough not to show in court.
If you've been to court enough times, you know you can just copy what the paralegals do. Plead guilty to a lesser charge etc.

So what will your excuse be? Thought it was an 80 zone. Well even if that excuse would work (it won't ) then you are still travelling 9 over the speed limit you thought it was.

I sure hope your lawyer is working pro bono or is a friend cause that bill will far exceed the ticket amount. And regardless of what a lawyer may tell you, in my experience I have not seen too many win the case.

As I stated before, speeding is an absolute liability offence which means there is no excuse under law to be exceeding the speed limit. |Your only hope is to create enough doubt in the judge's mind that you were not speeding in the first place.

Good Luck
