And I agree with DWVW - my experience has been that I worked longer and harder for way less return at an independent than at a major chain.
I agree with all the rest too that it is the people running the operation more than what it says on the signage

maybe i should start another post for this but we'll see.
what does everybody use as their reference system, i use our alpine f#1 status cda7990 and mrvf900 amplifier, with avi bsm direct components,in some cool vented cabinets, and i also use my sennheiser headphones at home as my home gear is a less than ideal room, my f#1 gear in my showroom sounds outstanding, imo, i wonder how many people actually have a decent reference system. i mean if you dont really know how its supposed to sound, how do you know if it sounds good in yours or anyone elses car, what does everyone use as their reference system

Fortunately I know my ****, and do my research. I recommend ANYONE do this before seeing a dealer so they have the ability to filter out the mixed messages they may hear.

No, you're right, if you mean from a dealers perspective between the products he or she sells.
What I mean is you go to a JL dealer and JL pounds the crap out of everyone, its the greatest thing ever. Walk into a Rockford dealer (different shop), Rockford is the greatest, beats anything else on the market. So someone new to the car audio game would get a lot of mixed messages if they didn't do some research and see what it is that they want out of their system.
People can make a bad choice, of course they can, if they buy something which doesn't match what they want out of their car. For example I am assembling a high SQ system so none of those 5 is even on my list (except Alpine for decks). I would be foolish to buy Alpine (the normal line) or Rockford speakers over say Focal, Dynaudio or Alpine F1 Status (if I could even afford the F1's). For an SQ application, they aren't even in the same league.

-D </font>
Your first point above illustratea my view perfectly how too many consumers these day buy gear based on specifications and internet heresay. If you honestly believe that a Tru amp will offer some sonic epiphany over something like a rockford well all I can say is it is your money - feel free to spend it how you will
And your second comment is simply moronic. Again, idiots and professionals work in any store. To judge by the sign out front is foolish.
But then you are assembling a high end system over the internet so you know what you are doing, unlike your average consumer..

diabolik, any guys selling on my floor had better think that what we sell is the best, so long as it doesnt get dishonest, like saying that jensen amp is better than a phoenix gold t500.2 or something like that, would you expect the guy selling toyota camry's to tell a customer that the honda civic is better, both cars are equally good, right, but the salesman has to sell the camry based on its merits, not just tell the guy to go buy a civic
Wow... Relax man.
The reason I don't go to a major chain is because I am more likely to find a good dealer who is helpful at a smaller shop, generally speaking. I am not saying this is always the case, I am saying that it is the case quite often. Plus major chains don't sell what I want most of the time.
I am not assembling a high end system over the internet, I am building one based on what I hear. What I am saying is that I tried doing something over the internet myself and found it to be pointless. I thought at first that it would be a good way to go about getting a great system, but in the end it caused more problems than it was worth, so I just used it for information gathering and then went and trusted my ears. Much happier about my choices now.
Why are high end amps which cost 5 figures used in high end home theaters as opposed to Kenwoods or Pioneers which cost 3? Because they are better quality, better sounding amps. If the statement you made about a high end device being relatively the same as a mid range / mainstream, then everyone would have the lower end gear because it sounds the same. Fact is, it doesn't, and this also applies to car audio. If all you've ever heard is RF, then you don't know any better, but if you've heard RF amps, then some higher end amps, you do. I have heard both and I can say that there is a significant difference. Amps, head units, speakers, etc. If a person can't tell a Focal Utopia speaker from a Fanatic X speaker from Rockford then they haven't really listened to the speakers, and aren't concerned with or listening for tonal quality and natural sound. Amps, same thing.
Anyway people are starting to take things way too personally. No offense was intended.
Relax.
Go Leafs.
