Well... lol, that would be beyond my knowledge, therefore I would let someone chime in that actually knows about their universe, and learn from them... not speak out my ***, just to build my post numbers. lol

I've learned A LOT on this forum. I usually only post on first hand experience/knowledge.

if the installed called for one normal and one inverse mount isn't that in effect an isobaric setup, which would mean he'd either need to change the phase to 180 degrees if he has it, or wire one sub in reverse?

oh, and the quote in my sig did actually happen. I was heading home from the driving range and stopped at a light with a bar on the corner. Everyone outside seemed to be impressed except the guy with no house go figure

You are correct. Usually isobaric is when subs fire toward eachother. I haven't played with that design much. With subs in two different directions, the inverted subs would have to be wired reverse phase (out of phase) so they move the same direction as the forward firing sub(s). If you change the phase using your deck 180degrees, won't help because it will switch all subs.

Close. Yes, one normal, one inverted will require a 180 degree phase shift for the inverted sub (or to simplify that statement for the OP connect the + from the amp to the - of the sub, and the - of the amp to the + of the sub). but this doesn't make it isobaric in itself.

The purpose of Isobaric is to make 2 subs work as 1 sub. This has a few "benefits"
1. Smaller air-space for the sub. If the sub normally wanted 1 cubic foot, you could clam-shell them and have both subs working on only .5 cubic feet. - draw back, you now have two subs, taking twice the power yielding the same db out-put of 1 sub.
2. Removing "non-linearities" of the sub excursion. A sub will deform slightly as it pushes out, and will deform differently as it pulls in. The theory goes that greater these differences are the more the sub will "colour" the sound. Mounting the subs as isobaric clam-shell will remove at lot of these "non-linearities" as the one will be moving out as the other moves in hopefully canceling out these irregularities.

So Isobaric requires one sub to be wired in phase with the other sub out of phase, with as little air as possible between the subs. The more air, the move variables in combating those evil non-linearities.

Cute theory and all, but not really worth it.
