If you want the subs to remain in phase with the rest of the car you will have to wire the - amp to the sub + etc. Otherwise, the subs will be out of phase with your speakers and there will be cancellation (albeit minor cancellation, a carefull listening will hear that some of the mid bass notes will disappear.
As for firing direction, most people find that aiming the subs to the rear gives greater spl (I personally find this). I partially understand the physics of it, something about wave lengths reflecting off the back and amplifying as it goes forward. In most cars it is louder to aim them at the back of the car.

aiming to the rear can give more output, but you have to play with the positioning. I found that the subs had to be about 6" from the rear of the trunk to get more output. Any further away and it dropped off. That was in a 2000 Intrepid and a 2004 300M, which have very large trunks. Try it everywhere...it really costs nothing but time and effort.
