I would say HAT has won too many competitions to be a fluke. Their results generally speak for themselves.

OP, I noticed you said the Adire Extremis seemed appealing to you. Well, an even better option would probably be the CSS SDX7. It has great throw and output at low frequencies and is way, way cleaner than the Extremis. They feature a similar low distortion XBL^2 motor and might be a good option for you. Response can get a bit rough up top but if it's to be used as dedicated midbass in a 3 way, it's a good option.

edit: And if you don't go that route, I also recommend the Revelators. Great drivers!

I can't find that thread, but indeed you did say the Altima was the end all SQ car because it's won a couple championships.

LMAO... I know nothing?!..........HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAH A...... my work speaks for its self, I've worked on at least one car that has won finals and SEVERAL others that placed quite well.

Go check out the Audiowaves website, find me a car on there that I haven't at least had a hand in building......like I said, my work speaks for its-self.....where's your championship car?

Oh I suppose it'll be in Florida

JohnVroom. I think I was the only guy who won at finals this year with Scan product. I didn't check out all the cars ofcourse, but other then mine I only noticed Matts Roberts truck to have Scan (awsome sounding truck too!).

If the Extremis woofer will work for you there are a few options to go with. Mypre Audio uses a woofer that is the same as the Extremis except for the carbon cone and CCS has a new woofer out (SDX7) that is a replacemet for the Extremis. I would still say the JBL and the Scan are the best woofers available, but if like how the Extremis measures up, you may want the check them out. Cheap too!

Any car/truck with space could be a good SQ platform. It's all in how you put the car togther and tune it.

Gumby.Did you compete at all this season (2007). Not sure if I had the chance to check out your ride.

The JLs someone posted a link to look very nice...

I am also intrigued about the Subduction woofers but can't find any info on them... do you have a link to specs/pics Ligeia ??? (I looked at pics of the 15" sub they make; they seem to use two top plates glued together probably to save on machining costs.... more then likely isn't as good as using a single slug IMO)

Anyway I just picked up a pair of TangBand 6.5 subs which use a large overhung motor and seem to be very similar to the Adire Extremis which Fozz pointed out to me not long ago.....

I will be installing them in my doors with a small enclosure & AP mat... and although I haven't heard them yet my first impression was "BEEFCAKE"

I bring these speakers up first John because you mention you want 80-250Hz bandwidth which I'm sure all of the above can handle... and especially because you mention you may make your own passives....... I'd advise against this for reasons you probably already know.... but if you did build passives 'for the challange of it all' its a good idea to use speakers with an fs at least an octave below your cut off frequency....

The only other speaker I will bring up is the Lanzar OptiDrive 6.5s which I have three pairs of (I liked them that much) they are more of a typical midwoofer in that they don't have a ton of xmax (probably 3mm one way) and an FS around 70Hz...... but they have a large 3" voice coil and can handle lots of power; and are very reasonably priced......... infact my only complaint with the speakers is that the grills they came with are fairly cheesy..... but other then that I'd say they are definately on par with alot of other 'high end' 6.5's

You can see some of the pictures of the SDX7 that I took here:

First Batch: CSS SDX7's vs. Adire Extremis 6.8 - SoundGround

Creativesound.ca has the thiele/small parameters up right now, which unlike the Extremis, are accurate. In my opinion, the SDX7 is better than the Extremis in virtually every respect.

Almost all large XBL^2 drivers are using the stacked top plate approach. Doesn't really save money on machining, but does save money on the steel. The flux lines aren't noticeably different using this approach.

^ But every XBL woofer I've ever seen seems to use a single slug top plate...?

Its quite obvious to me that a single slug is a better approach...... but perhaps it dosen't matter that much...

I also forgot to mention that the JL 6W0 makes for a potent midbass, although I don't think they still produce them.....

The old XBL^2 drivers do...the new ones (Exodus and CSS, primarily) are all coming out with the dual stack approach. We'll see what the new Stereo Integrity Mag looks like.

I think the single slug is certainly more attractive, but if you FEA it out, the difference in flux is negligible, and certainly not audible.

•Adire Extremis- might be the best driver (spec wise since few have heard it) for my application but Adire is ka-put (I am left with used on eBay) and this was low production too
•JBL 2118 is tonally gorgeous and as an 8" it would be a bear to fit, also that line is ka-put (I am left with used on eBay) I could go with their 6.5” comp set mid for a flavor of the 2118
•The Scan Speaks- will work
•Usher- one of my choices, will work for less $
•The B&W option- the 602 is obsolete (I am left with used on eBay) but still on the table since I know how good B&W can sound
•CDT- yet to research, no local dealers but not a major issue
•Macrom- intriguing
•Focal 5WS- was found to be in last place in the sight listed below …but where it excels spec wise and from my personal experience it still is a great option
•Dayton RS225- unheard but cheep, cheep, cheep, and they excel spec wise in this area
•Dynaudio- spec wise they always suck but they sound good, they want more internal volume than I would prefer
•Hybrid- I am holding off on these, though they are near perfect for my application, since I promised Scott I would use them next build (I am not a shill but they also fit the bill nicely spec wise) though I have not heard the 6” or 8” driver they are in the same price range as the Scan Speak and I don’t think a well made low production driver needs to apologize for being pricey

So far this thread has been a great asset… thank you CCA, of the speakers listed above the Dynaudio, Buwalda Hybrids and Macrom were designed for car audio (Focal’s 5W too I think), so we ARE ALL thinking out of the box.

Kstich- your sight was a nice compliment to the Zaph site I use thank you! http://www.markk.claub.net/Testing/testing.htm
The 2118 is still available from JBL...
