All fantastic ideas... I used to do exactly that at my shop in "the middle of nowhere" in Central Ontario. I would run the meter, my guys would run the shop, my wife would run the barbeque and every Friday night we would set up and see who came out.
The first few shows were less than stellar for turnout (5 to 10 cars), but as the promotion moved forward, it turned into 20, 30 even 40 cars every Friday night.
And, it wasn't just diehard competitors... it was local people just wanting to check out what their system could do.
And (putting my shop owner's hat on) Friday night was my best day of the week for business, nearly triple what I'd do on a regular day or even a Saturday. The best part was we were all just hangin' out... it wasn't about business, it was about having fun and the business just came to us.
No offense to competitors (hell, I was one for almost ten years), but dealers need to look at competitions as an advertising tool... and when advertising, consistency is the key factor for success.
I can't speak for the other orgs, but IASCA's Rookie classes are designed for the local people who have never done it before and want to see what it's like. I know, I designed those classes!
And here's another thought regarding expenses... Most veteran competitors don't really care if they get a trophy or not; they know what their cars can do and they're usually at events to gain points. So, just have trophies for the Rookie Classes and do cash prizes for the veteran guys (like winning their entry fee back for first place). Budget gets reduced, newcomers have an award to show off to their friends and the veteran competitors who win get to compete for free...
And fyi, the sanctioning fee for IASCA events is only $50.00, not $100.00. Plus, any current IASCA member can now host events as long as their membership is current.

Oh, and P.S., I ran a show every Friday night at my shop... anywhere between 25 and 35 shows a year, depending on weather...
I had newcomers from town and veteran competitors who would come from as far away as Toronto and Oshawa every Friday night!

Nice to see so much interest in this thread, but lets strighten a few things out. It was never stated by anyone at ACA that they were not doing shows. It was stated they are not doing DB Drag anyone more. There were some decisions made my the DB Drag that didn't agree with ACA. They are moviong towards a local development with their communties. For example, a BASS RACE style for competitions once a month at each locations for 4 months, with a final at the end. but you have to place in the top three at 7 of the 21 events...this is only talk at this point.
Money was and never is an issue for this retailer...
I am working on a 10 show circuit for shows...but you guys have to realize these things dont happen over night.
When everything settles down (starter season), I want arrrange a meetng with all the good people hosting shows and get a plan to work together so over lapping shows etc.
Truth is that it does matter the format James' SPL, IASCA, USACi or DB Drag...Fred's SPL...shows are about having fun with people of the same interests as you.
