help: amp or tweeters are crackling (kinda long)

OK, so a lil bit back, less than a month ago, i ordered a set of CDT Audio CL-61a component speakers, as they were on for half price.
Had them installed professionaly, cause i didn't know how to do it, nor trusted myself with them. Got that done, and ran them off my amp at 35x2rms by accident. Did that for a while, they were still clearer than the old components i think, but after a while at higher volumes, the right side tweeter mysteriously stopped. I turned it down and it kicked back in right away. From then on on that same side i seem to notice cracking or crackling at higher volumes.
A few days later i was checking my amp to see that i had the speakers hooked up to the front channels instead of hte back by accident. So i switched them to hte back so they're getting 75x2rms. Still seem to hear that crackin at higher volumes from the one speaker or tweeter, and a buddy noticed it too.
Maybe a day later, my new amp came in, alpine mrv-t420 (specs say 110x2 birthcard says 124.3x2 all @4ohms)
So i installed htat and set all my gains from scratch, using 2 neat gain setting cd's i found on the internet. Stereo system is a fair bit quieter, but some of the notes i didn't hear before, are now a lil clearer. Ok so driving around at about 26volume (max 35) where i set my gains too and still i can hear crackling every once in a while outta my right side. Seems it's mainly on certain songs, a j-lo song and i can't remember the other.
So i talked to a few people, the shop that installed them, and hte CDT audio tech support, all of them said try switching the left speaker with the right at the amp. So i switched those cables around about 10min ago before going for a drive...and now i think i can hear the left speaker crackling a tiny bit or so i think...as well i hear it outta the right side still if my hearing is right. I'm gonna try a lil longer and see if i can pinpoint it to a side or not.
But any suggestions on what to do? Or what might be the cause. All three people said do the above, and if it switched sides it's probably the amp, if not it's the speaker, in which case send them back and they'll fix them, or tell me i screwed it and i gotta buy a new tweeter or what not. But would it make any reason to hear both sides crackling? It's becoming tough to distinguish between some of the high-hat and this crackling.

ok....i did some driving around today, and i can definitely hear this clicking from both speakers. I've heard it from two different amps! 1 amp putting out 75rms the other doing 125rms. Speakers are rated at 90rms i believe.
what else should i check?

Don't Alpine's head units start to distort at like 22 volume ? You've got yours at 26 ... Maybe you should try setting your gains at 22 volume and see if it goes away [img]smile.gif[/img]
It's just my experience at least ... With BBE/MX off, I can hear distortion at around 22 on both my CDA-7873 and my GF's CDA-7893, although it's tolerable (for me) up to 24 volume (B = 0, T = -2 for mine, B = -1, T = 0 for my GF's) Also, both are definitely not from clipping as my gains are set very low on my amp (very near all the way down, which is supposed to be 4 volts) and my GF uses the internal amp ...

hmm thats a good idea, i can try that...never thought about the HU being a problem down that far, but it's worth a try. If i remember right thats how my brother had his set up with a similar setup loud was at like 16 and crazy loud was around 21...i'll try and give that a go sometime today

Ok, sounds like your x-over has tweeter protection and cuts off the tweeter when too much heat/distortion is sent to them... Also you might have damaged the x-over on both sides by now. I would try a different x-over for the tweeter and see what happens. Had a similar issue with some Polk comp set from back in the day a friend bought the 5.25 set and blew the 5.25 and gave me the tweeter and x-over... MM3000 tweeter and the x-over would always give me grief so I had some radio shack 3-way x-overs and used them instead and what a difference, sound was better and no more tweeter cutting out.
Also could be the music you are playing. I notice with my Infinity 605cs set when on the FM radio I hear a lot of crap seems like they play crappy MP3's on the radio now but play a good CD and night and day performance...
