Wow quite the thread. I just want to add one thing to the whole "clipping" debate:
If you clip a CD to your rear-view mirror with some string your system will be louder [img]graemlins/wavey.gif[/img]
Myth: The further distance away you can hear your stereo the louder it actually is.
Myth: 400W @ 14.4V is more power than 350W @ 12V

OF course, day to day, the 350watt amp may deliver more usable power overall if the 400w one has really bad regulation but then aren't you propagating another myth right there? Hm, a conundrum.

400 w @14.4 works out to 333 w @ 12V
350 W @12 works out to 420 @ 14.4v
